Brooke Scalloped Cardigan

Brooke is worked sideways and expertly combines small and larger scallop motifs to create a layered look. Finished off with a darker color on the edges, this cardigan is a polished addition to your spring closet.

Place a removable stitch marker or safety pin between 3rd & 4th (4th & 5th, 4th & 5th, 4th & 5th) column on shoulder side.

Armhole Shaping

Cont established Small Scallop patt, work 7 (7.5, 8, 8) scallops from hem to underarm on each column, work 4 (4, 4, 6) columns for underarm shaping.

Front

Join a second ball of MC at end of last row on Armhole Shaping, ch 35 (40, 45, 45) sts, break yarn. Cont established scallop pattern, work 10.5 (11.5, 12.5, 12.5) scallops from hem to shoulder on each column, work 3 (3, 4, 4) columns.

Front Neck Shaping

Shoulder Seaming

With RS facing inside, join Front and Back Shoulders together on WS with Single Crochet Method. Fasten off.

Sleeve Seaming

With RS facing inside and Single Crochet Method, join sleeve on both ends of cuff edging, *ch 3, join Sleeve on both ends of next sc row; rep from * to where sleeve decreasing began.  Fasten off.

Sleeve Assembly Preparation

With Body piece RS facing, start from center of underarm, work 125 (139, 153, 165) sc around armholes. Fasten off.

Sleeves Assembly

With Body piece and Sleeve RS facing inside, join Body and back Sleeve together on WS with Single Crochet Method. Fasten off.

Edgings

With RS facing, work 2 rows of sc evenly around Front, Neckline, and Hem. Break yarn.

(Optional) Work 1 row of sc with CC along the Front and Neckline.

Finishing

Weave in end. Block.

    I think this is the most beautiful stitch pattern I have ever worked. That said, I also believe there are precautions to take. I made the largest size (44) but shortened it to the length of the small (10.5 scallops). I think the stitching which goes from hem to neckline allows the garment to stretch in length a bit so even my best effort at keeping the sweater hem right at the top of my hips has been a bit thwarted. The pattern is labeled “intermediate” and to be sure there is nothing particularly complicated about it except for trying to figure out what the pattern was asking you to do. I would have rated this advanced based on the pattern instructions. I am glad I made this. I wish it looked a bit better on me but I think that is my problem, not the pattern’s problem.
