Discover our collection of shawls and ponchos

Keep yourself toasty all season with these cozy designs for crochet shawls

Wrapping up in a handmade shawl or poncho is one of the perks of being a crocheter: not only can we enjoy creating the project, but also we can showcase our special creations by wearing them! Crocheted ponchos and shawls are a cold weather staple because of the versatility: dress them up when you head to the stores for your holiday shopping, and dress them down when you’re lounging at home with a cup of coffee and your favorite book. Plus, they make great gifts!

We have a variety of shawls and ponchos in our library that will keep you stitching through the holiday season and beyond. Whether you prefer light and lacy designs or thick and cozy, your wardrobe is going to thank you for these stylish additions.

A real standout is Angèle Lumière’s Macoun Leaf Shawl, which features an allover mesh pattern set off by a column of leaf motifs near one edge. It’s stunning.

Angèle used a deep purplish red yarn that brings to mind the color of a fresh Macoun apple. The color is so appropriate for a shawl named after this apple variety, because its flavor has notes of raspberry.

This poncho is designed in a peacoat style, with a buttoned front and a handy hood. Its double-breasted design adds a classic touch, and the hood transforms it into a modern wrap. Beautifully crocheted in red, the Cortland Hooded Poncho is in part inspired by bright red Cortland apples. An easily-memorized stitch pattern makes the Courtland Poncho quick to crochet, and you’ll appreciate that because you’ll want to wear it ASAP! Finish this beauty off with real leather buttons for a touch of tradition.

The Red Delicious Ruana is a comfortable, easy-to-wear way to make sure you stay warm this season. Ruanas are open-front ponchos with Central and South American origins. They combine the best features of scarves and ponchos, being loose and long, but the fronts can also be thrown over the shoulder or closed with a beautiful pin. This piece is crocheted in white and red, and it’s beginner friendly, too!

On those cooler winter evenings when you need some extra layers to keep you warm, the Chai Tea Latte Poncho would be the perfect accessory. It will keep you warm and cozy yet still looking stylish and chic! This poncho features the stitch commonly known as Catherine’s Wheel, a textured stitch that is all in one color for a sophisticated look.

Inspired by cold nights, the scent of Juniper pine trees, and a warm fire in a log cabin, the Juniper Wrap is so cozy and warm, you’ll be wearing it all season. A simple, oversized rectangle, looped fringe, and the moss stitch make this project one you will wear again and again.

The stitch design in Cedar Wrap is reminiscent of ripples of light through the cedar trees in winter. Featuring a rich combination of long color repeats with an easy, repetitive stitch pattern, this large cozy wrap is perfect for wintertime.

I signed up and they had me change my password and when I go into my account it keeps asking me change password again and again. So I can’t get into my account to see patterns. Very frustrated.

I wish you were also on print. I like to have your magazines in hand to find a pattern I want and need. I guess this is not possible. Do you have a Kindle connection?

No answer to my questions previously asked either. I tend to copy/paste the pattern so I can print it out.

Hello! I am sorry to hear that previous questions have gone unanswered – I want to make that right! At this time, we do recommend printing patterns that you want to crochet and there’s a handy little printer button on the left side of the page that will hopefully make this process easier than copying and pasting each time. Do let us know if you run into any trouble! Happy crocheting! – Nicola

I don’t know if I’ve had answers to the questions I’ve asked, because I never get back to the same page to look later.

When I see a pattern I like, I click on the print button, then tell my computer to “print to PDF”. I have all my patterns sorted into folders by type of pattern. When there’s other files with a pattern, like charts or something, I put the pattern and all its charts in a subfolder. This way I always have access to the patterns I like, I can look through them to find a particular one, and I don’t have to go searching the entire site to find them again.

Hi Elizabeth! Apologies for the delay in reply! We unfortunately are not in print, but we do have a tablet subscription for iPad and Android tablets. You are also welcome to print off individual patterns when you find one that you would like to crochet. Please let me know if you have any other questions! – Nicola

The best way to save your pattern is print to Microsoft PDF converter. It’s already in your computer! Select Print in the browser menu, click the down arrow to select the PDF converter, click the next down arrow to select “Custom”, then save the pages you want of the pattern to a crochet file by : e.g. 2-5, then rename the file as the name of the garment/item to crochet and save.
