Cortland Hooded Poncho

Cortland Hooded Poncho

A hooded poncho with a peacoat style and a buttoned front is an apple orchard dream come true. Beautifully crocheted in red, this poncho is in part inspired by tart Cortland apples.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Finished Bust Size 34 (38, 42, 46, 50, 54)” to fit 44 (48, 58, 62, 66, 70)”

10” ease recommended.

Gauge: 18 sts and 17 rows = 4” [10 cm] in st patt after blocking

Materials

Yarns: Berroco Comfort (50% Super Fine Nylon, 50% Super Fine Acrylic; 210 yards [193 meters]/100 grams): #9755 Wild Cherry (8 (8, 9, 10, 10, 10) skeins)

Hook: US size H/7 (4.50 mm)

Notions: Removable stitch markers (25), eight 1” / [25 mm] buttons, one 0.75” / [19 mm] button, tapestry needle

Special Stitches

Foundation single crochet (fsc)

Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 1 lp (first ch made), yo, draw through 2 lps on hook (first fsc made), *insert hook under 2 lps of ch just made, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 1 lp (ch made), yo, draw through 2 lps on hook (Fsc made); rep from * for indicated number of foundation sts.

Foundation half double crochet (fhdc)

Ch 2, yo, insert hook into first ch, yo, pull up lp, yo, pull through 1 lp on hook, (first ch made), yo, pull through 3 lps on hook (first fhdc made), *insert hook under 2 lps of fhdc just made, yo, pull up a lp, yo, pull through 1 lp, yo, pull through 3 lps on hook (fhdc made); rep from * for indicated number of foundation sts. 

3-stitch buttonhole

Work 2 fsc, insert hook under 2 lps of last ch made, yo, draw up a lp, sk next 3 sts, insert hook into next st, yo, draw up a lp through st AND first lp on hook, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook.

Pattern Notes

Cape worked top down.

Cape is peacoat style so there is overlap of the right panel over the left.

Buttonholes are worked on the right panel, except for one inside button.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, hdc in first sc, *sk next sc, 2 hdc in next sc; rep from * across until last sc, hdc in last sc, turn.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Rows 3-35: Rep Rows 1-2, ending with a hdc row.

Row 36: Take Hood and fold in half, ch 1, fsc 5, attach to other half of Hood and start working sc in each st along Hood, sl st into first fsc, sc in next fsc, turn.

Row 37: Hdc in first st, sk next st, *2 hdc in next st, sk next st; rep from * to end of row until reach fsc ch, sl st into fsc, sc in next fsc, turn.

Row 38: Sc in each st along until reach fsc, sl st in fsc, sc in next fsc, turn.

Row 39: Hdc in first st, sk next st, *2 hdc in next st, sk next st; rep from * to end of row until reach fsc ch, sl st into fsc, sc in next fsc, turn.

Seam back of hood. 

Finishing

Block Hood and Cape separately and to measurements.

Seam Hood to Cape.

Sew on buttons.

  1. On the left panel, sew on four 1” buttons corresponding to the buttonholes located on the right panel
  2. On the right panel, working 6” from the left of each buttonhole, sew on 1” buttons (see photo for example).
  3. Going back to neckline, about 6” into top right lapel, sew on 0.75” button.
  4. Overlapping of panels: left panel is overlapped by about 6” of the right panel so inside buttoning is achievable.
