Scraptastic Log Cabin Blanket

This is playful log cabin-style baby blanket that uses a traditional quilt pattern to highlight the importance of family and community. The red of the central square, typically used in quilts of this type, symbolizes the hearth. The two stitch patterns used for the strips add texture to the geometric layout and resemble true patchwork.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Each log cabin block is approx. 10″ sq, blocked; finished blanket measures approx. 40″ sq, blocked

Gauge: 1 square = 3.25″ sq, blocked

Materials

Yarn: Cascade Yarns Heritage Solids (75% merino wool, 25% nylon; 437 yards [400 meters]/100  grams): #5606 Deep Red (A, 1 skein), #5618 Natural (D, 1 skein); Fingering-weight yarn scraps in two colorways (B, C) for log-cabin strips. Each log-cabin strip requires less than 10 grams of yarn.
Hook: US size F/5 (3.75 mm) hook
Notions: Locking stitch marker

Abbreviations

Bb hdc: Back bump half double crochet
Bb sc: Back bump single crochet
Bb sl st: Back bump slip stitch
Hdc: Half double crochet
Hdc blo: Half double crochet back loop only

Special Stitches

Back Bump Stitches: The square’s spiral pattern is created with back bump stitch, also known as “camel crochet stitch.”
The typical way of making crochet stitches is to insert the hook into the top of the stitch below, beneath both legs of the “V.” To make back bump stitches, instead insert the hook into the horizontal strand behind the stitch (just below the “V” on the top of the stitch) from the top, and then complete stitch normally.

Yours’ is one of my favorite sites. Your patterns are awesome and always easy to print. If you have done Pinterest much, you will see why I appreciate this. Anything on their site you end up printing 30 pages (mostly advertising) and if you want a printable copy you pay for it. You are very much appreciated.
