Lime-Trimmed Cardigan

This little two-tone baby cardigan is a simple and elegant layering piece for when the weather is still cold and a little extra warmth is much appreciated. With its eye-catching dot yoke and soft A-line shape, it is bound to become a timeless favorite.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Sizes 3M (6M, 12M, 18M, 2) with finished chest size 19 ½ (20 ½, 21 ½, 22 ¼, 24 ¾)” to fit chest 16 (17, 18, 19, 21)”. 3 ½” positive ease recommended.

Gauge: 17 sts and 11 ½ rows = 4” [10 cm] in hdc after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Ice Yarns Baby Wool (40% wool, 60% acrylic; 164 yards [150 meters]/50 grams): Gray (MC, 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) balls), Green (CC, 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) ball)
Hook: US size G/6 (4.0 mm) hook
Notions: 4 markers, tapestry needle, three size 3/8” sew-on snap buttons

Abbreviations

Fhdc: Foundation half double crochet
hdc2tog: (yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook – 1 stitch decreased
hdc1inc: Half double crochet increase: work 2 hdc in the same stitch
hdc2inc: Double half double crochet increase: work 3 hdc in the same stitch

Special Stitches

Foundation Half Double Crochet: Make a slip knot and place onto hook, ch 3, yo and insert hook into both lps of the third st from hook, yo and draw through the first ch on hook, yo and ch 1, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hook, *yo, insert hook in ch part of previous st, yo and draw through the first ch on hook, yo and ch 1, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hook; rep from *.
5-dc cluster: *yo, insert hook in next st, yo, draw yarn through st, yo, draw through 2 ls on hook *; rep from * to * 4 times, yo, draw yarn through all lps on hook – 5-dc cluster made.
Reverse single crochet: Working from left to right, insert crochet hook in edge st and pull up lp, yo and draw lp through the first lp to join, *insert hook in next st to the right, pull up a lp, yo and draw through both lps on hook; rep from *.

Pattern Notes

The cardigan is worked from the top down, starting with the collar and yoke. The body is separated from the sleeves and worked to the required length. The sleeves are worked flat and joined with sl sts. The reverse single crochet edging is then added to the body and cuff or armhole.
Always remove stitch markers as you come to them and replace markers after working the stitches indicated.
A turning chain of 1 ch is used throughout, but you could use 2 ch if you prefer.
The turning chain is not counted as a stitch, unless otherwise indicated.
Shown in size 6M.

Pattern

With MC yarn, make 44 (46, 46, 48, 52) fhdc.

Yoke – Top Section

Row 1: Ch 1, turn,  hdc 10 (10, 10, 10, 11), hdc2inc in next st, PM in center of 3 sts just made, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) sts, hdc2inc, PM in center of 3 sts just made, 1 hdc in each of the next 16 (16, 16, 16, 18) sts, hdc2inc, PM in center of 3 sts just made, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) sts, hdc2inc, PM in center of 3 sts just made, hdc 10 (10, 10, 10, 11).
You now have markers in the center st of 4 hdc2incs. On the following rounds move these markers and place them in the center of the new hdc2incs as they are made.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, *hdc to M, hdc2inc; rep from * three more times, hdc to end. (8 sts increased)
Rep row 2 for another 4 (5, 5, 6, 8) times for a total of 92 (102, 102, 112, 132) sts. During the last rep, remove M as you go.
Break yarn.

Stip Section

Row 1: Attach CC yarn at the end of previous row, turn, ch 3 (counts as dc), sk first 3 sts, 5-dc in next st, *sk next 4 sts, 5 dc in next st; rep from * to last 3 sts before end, skip next 2 sts, dc 1.
Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2), sk first st, work 5-dc cluster over next 5 sts, *ch 4, work 5-dc cluster over next 5 sts; rep from * across to last st before end, ch 2, dc 1 in top of turning ch.
Break yarn.

Yoke – Bottom Section

Row 1: Attach MC yarn at the end of previous row, turn, ch 1, sc 3 in ch-2 space, sc 1 in top of 5-dc cluster, *sc 4 in ch-4 space, sc 1 in top of 5-dc cluster; rep from * across to last ch-2 space, sc 3 in ch-2 space.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn,  hdc 16 (17, 17, 18, 21), hdc2inc in next st, PM in center of 3 sts just made, 1 hdc in each of the next 14 (17, 17, 20, 24) sts, hdc2inc, PM in center of 3 sts just made, 1 hdc in each of the next 28 (30, 30, 32, 38) sts, hdc2inc, PM in center of 3 sts just made, 1 hdc in each of the next 14 (17, 17, 20, 24) sts , hdc2inc, PM in center of 3 sts just made, hdc 16 (17, 17, 18, 21). There are now a total of 100 (110, 110, 120, 140) sts.
You now have markers in the center st of 4 hdc2incs again. On the following rounds move these markers and place them in the center of the new hdc2incs as they are made.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, *hdc to M, hdc2inc; rep from * three more times, hdc to end. (8 sts increased)
Rep row 7 for another 2 (2, 3, 3, 0) times for a total of 124 (134, 142, 152, 148) sts.

Size 2 Only
Next row: Ch 1, turn, *hdc to 1 st before M, hdc1inc, hdc to M, hdc 1, hdc1inc; rep from * once, hdc to end. (4 sts increased)
Rep this row once more for a total of 156 sts.

All Sizes
There are now 21 (22, 23, 24, 26) sts on each front, 38 (40, 42, 44, 48) sts on back and 22 (25, 27, 30, 28) sts on each sleeve for a total of 124 (134, 142, 152, 156) sts.

Make Armholes by Separating Body and Sleeves

Row 1: Ch 1, turn, *hdc to M, hdc 1, ch 2 (2, 2, 2, 4), sk 22 (25, 27, 30, 28) sts to next M; rep from *, hdc to end.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, *hdc to M, hdc 1, hdc 2 (2, 2, 2, 4) in ch of prev row, hdc in next marked st; rep from *, hdc to end. There are now a total of 84 (88, 92, 96, 108) sts.
Remove markers.
Next row: Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across.
Rep this row another 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) times.

A-line Increase Section

Row 1: Ch 1, turn,  hdc 11 (11, 12, 12, 14), hdc 1 and PM in next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 23 (24, 25, 27, 30) sts, hdc 1 and PM in next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 12 (14, 14, 14, 16) sts, hdc 1 and PM in next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 23 (24, 25, 27, 30) sts, PM in next st, hdc 11 (11, 12, 12, 14).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, *hdc to 1 st before M, hdc1inc, hdc 1, hdc to next M, hdc 1, hdc1inc; rep from * once, hdc to end. (4 sts increased)
Rows 3-4: Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across.
Rows 5-16: Rep rows 2-4 four times for a total of 104 (108, 112, 116, 128) sts.

Size 18M and 2 Only
Rep rows 2-4 once more.
Remove markers.

All Sizes
Next row: Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across.
Rep this row until piece measures 6 ¼ (6 ½, 6 ¾, 7 ½, 7 ¾) inch from underarm.
Fasten off.

Sleeves

Row 1: With RS facing, attach MC yarn at center bottom of armhole, ch 1, hdc 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) sts from underarm ch sts plus 2 st extra to avoid holes, hdc 22 (25, 27, 30, 28), hdc 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) sts from underarm ch sts plus 2 st extra. (28 (31, 33, 36, 36) sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, hdc1inc, hdc to 1 st before end, hdc1inc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, hdc across.
Then work even until the sleeve measures 5 ½ (5 ¾, 6 ¾, 7 ½, 7 ¾) inch.
Next row: Ch 1, turn, hdc 0 (3, 0, 2, 2), *hdc2tog, hdc 3 (3, 3, 2, 2); rep from * to end.
With WS facing, place edges of sleeves together. Seam using slst or sew using yarn tail.
With RS facing attach CC yarn, ch 1 and sc around, join with a slst in the top of the ch 1. Then continue with 1 row of reverse single crochet, also with RS facing. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Repeat for second sleeve.

Edging

With RS facing attach CC yarn to bottom hem, ch 1, sc around hemline, 3 sc in corner st, up front opening, 3 sc in the front/neck corner, around neckline, 3 sc in the other front/neck corner and down other front opening, 3 sc in corner st, sc around remainder of hemline and join with a slst. Then continue with 1 row of reversed single crochet, also with RS facing.
Fasten off.

Finishing

Firmly sew on snap buttons according to schematic.
Weave in all ends, using yarn tails to sew up small holes at underarms.
Wet block into shape.
