Playtime Picnic Set

This three-piece baby set includes a juice bottle stuffy that rattles, a sandwich stuffy that crinkles and a cozy playmat that’s perfect for playing on. Plus, it doubles as a blanket to cuddle under for a nap when playtime is done! Best of all, you only need one skein of each color to make all three items.

Yarn: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice (100% acrylic; 145 yards [133 meters]/100 grams): Aqua (CA, 1 skein), Fern (CB, 1 skein), Duckie (CC, 1 skein), Scarlett (CD, 1 skein), White (CE, 1 skein), Toffee (CF, 1 skein)
Hooks: US size J/10 (6.0 mm) and US size I/9 (5.5 mm) hooks
Notions: Child safe crinkle material (7” x 7” square), plastic egg, jingle bell, fiberfill

Bottle Rattle Pattern Notes

For the Bottle Rattle use the US size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook and CA, CC, CD, and CF. Insert the jingle bell in the plastic egg and seal tightly.

Rnd 1: With CD, make a magic circle, sc 6 in the ring; join with a sl st to work in the round. Pull circle tight to close. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around; join with a sl st. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st; repeat from * around, join with a sl st. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, *2 sc in the next st, sc in the next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with a sl st. (24 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, * sc in the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st; repeat from * around, join with a sl st. (30 sts)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, bpsc in each st around; join with a sl st. (30 sts)
Rnds 7-17: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with a sl st. (30 sts)

Use CF to stitch smiley face into circle. Use long tail to sew label to bottle.

Crinkle Sandwich Pattern Notes

For the Crinkle Sandwich use the US size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook and CB, CE, and CF. Be sure to tightly crinkle the crinkle material before sewing it in, and use child-safe material.

Bread (Make Two)

Row 1: With CE, ch 18, skip 1 ch, sc in the remaining 17 chs; turn. (17 sts)
Rows 2-16: Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn. (17 sts)
Row 17: Ch 1, sc in the 1st st, *hdc in the next 2 sts, dc in the next 3 sts, dc in the next 2 sts, sc in the next st; repeat from * once, break yarn and finish off.

Crust Edge

With CF, sc evenly along edges of bread, working a sc3tog in center of Row 17.
Repeat for 2nd bread, leaving a long tail on one piece for assembly later. Use CF to stitch smiley face into one of the bread pieces as shown.

Lettuce (Make One)

Rnd 1: With CB, make a magic circle, dc 12 in the ring; join with a sl st to work in the round. Pull circle tight to close. (12 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), 2 dc in each st around; join with a sl st. (24 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st; repeat from * around, join with a sl st. (36 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, *dc in the next 2 sts, 2 dc in the next st; repeat from * around, join with a sl st. (48 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, *hdc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st, 5 tr in the next st, 2 dc in the next st; repeat from * around, join with a sl st, break yarn and finish off. (120 sts)

Assembly

Sew crinkled material to wrong side corners of bottom bread, so that the material bulges in the center. Do not sew all the way around.
Layer the pieces together: bottom bread (crinkle up), lettuce, top bread (smile up).
Using CF tail and a yarn needle, sew pieces together through all 3 layers, being sure to tuck crinkle material inside the toy.

Blanket Pattern Notes

For the Blanket use the US size J/10 (6.0 mm) hook and CA, CB, CC, CD, and CE. Vary where you join each new round to hide the joins.
