Special Stitches

Fhdc (foundation half double crochet)

Ch 3, insert hook in 3rd ch from hook and pull up a loop, ch 1, yo, pull through all loops (hdc made), *insert hook in ch just made (below hdc) pull up a loop, ch 1, yo, pull through all loops (hdc made); rep from * for required number.

Hdc Twisted Puff Spike Stitch (Hdc-TPS)

Note: There is a bit of artistry with the placement of the individual spikes in this complex st. If it doesn’t look good to you then remove that spike and replace in in a better location.

Place a stitch marker 2 sts from the one you are about to work over, this will be your next hdc and it can get lost in the making of this st, yo, insert hook one or two rows down and 3 or 4 sts forward (in the same direction you are stitching, ex: to the left for right-handed and to the right for left-handed), yo, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook 2 or 3 rows down and 2 or 3 sts forward of your work, yo, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook 4 or 5 rows down and directly below the st you are working over, yo, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook 2 or 3 sts behind and 2 or 3 rows down your work, yo, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook 1 or 2 rows down and 3 or 4 sts behind your work (the last 2 sts will cross over the first 3 creating the twist), yo, pull up last loop (you should have 11 loops on the hook), yo, carefully pull through all loops. This st can be made as big or as small as you would like, adjust the spacing and row depth accordingly.

Hdc Spike stitch (HdcSp)

Yo, insert hook into st in indicated row directly below the st being worked, yo, pull up a loop even with the sts of the row you are working on, yo, pull through all loops.

Notes: Spike stitches are a great way to add visual appeal to a project. Tension needs to be carefully monitored to avoid buckling of your work (too tight) or spikes that are too wobbly (too loose). The number sign after the st is a place holder for the number of rows down to make the spike for the HdcSp st and the longest spike of the TPS.
