Dog Mom Cowl

Winter can be harsh and accessories can be fun.  This simple to scale cowl will help keep you and your four-legged friend coordinated through the worst of the winter. Skip skimpy cowls that don’t stay by your neck and treat yourself to a cowl that will actually protect you. Plus, the matching dog cowl won’t get wrapped up in your dog’s leash and you two will look stylish and cozy all winter long.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Approximately 10″ [25 cm] wide x 44″ circumference, unblocked.

Gauge: 20 sts and 16 rows = 4″ [10 cm] square in hdc tbl, at rest not blocked.

Blocked finished piece will be closer to 22 sts and 14 rows = 4″ [10 cm] due to the weight of the piece


Medium weight yarnYarn: Universal Deluxe Worsted Tweed Superwash (90% Superwash Wool, 7% Acrylic, 3% Viscose; 218 yards [199 meters]/100 grams): 920 Camel (2 hanks)

Hook: US size H/8 (5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, 2 locking markers, blocking wires and blocking board with pins (optional)

Pattern Notes

Do not use a single crochet foundation chain, it will be too bulky; use a simple chain for the foundation and work first row as presented.

Worked flat and joined.

Ch 2 does not count as a stitch at the beginning of each row; does contribute to the height of the cowl approximately 0.2″ before blocking.

As presented without optional edging, the pattern will take just under 2 hanks. The edging can be made out of the left-over yarn from the dog’s cowl as presented or a complimentary 50 grams of worsted weight yarn of another skein from your scrap bag.


Ch 44.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in end of row, turn. (42 sts)

Rows 2-120: Ch 2, hdc bl in each hdc to end of row, turn.

Rep Row 2 until work meas 54″ or desired length when slightly stretched to flatten the ribbed fabric having just worked an even numbered row.

Hint: To try on the work in progress, temporarily fasten off work and try it on.

To join, with tail of starting ch opposite to that of the working yarn, fold the piece in half, *hdc through fl of hdc of previous row catching back bump of beg ch to join, yo, pull lp through, sl st; rep from * to end of row.

Fasten off.


Make square knot to join the tails.

Work tails back into the work along two different rows.

Optional Edging

Along one selvedge edge, pull up a lp, reverse sc (crab stitch) along selvedge edge.

Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Repeat along second selvedge edge.

Wash per ball band instructions.

Block to desired dimension using blocking wires.

Allow to air dry.
