Rugby Stripes Cardigan

With the transition from winter to spring in mind, the Rugby Striped Cardigan was carefully designed to be functional for both seasons! The bright mustard color is a nod to the bright season of spring ahead, while remaining a warm piece for those chilly days. This simple cardigan is elevated with the lovely stitch pattern with bold stripes.

Hook: US size H/8 (5.0 mm)

Special Stitches

Cluster (cl): (Sc, dc) in indicated st.

Triple dc tog: Yo, insert hook into same st as last st worked, yo and pull up lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hook, sk next st, yo, insert hook into next st, yo and pull up lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hook, yo, insert hook into same st, yo and pull up lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hook, yo and draw through all lps on hook.

Pattern Notes

The front and back panels are worked in rows, separately and seamed. The sleeves are worked from the armhole down in the round.

The stitch count is given in clusters (instead of each individual stitch).

Row 1: With MC, fsc 80 (88, 96, 106, 116, 132), turn.

Rows 2-11: Ch 1, sk first st, cl in next st, *sk next st, cl in next st, rep from * across, turn. (40 (44, 48, 53, 58, 66) cl)

Switch to CC.

Rows 12-21: Ch 1, sk first st, cl in next st, *sk next st, cl in next st, rep from * across, turn.

Switch to MC.

Rows 22-31: Ch 1, sk first st, cl in next st, *sk next st, cl in next st, rep from * across, turn.

Rep Rows 12-31 four more times for a total of 111 rows.

Fasten off.

Front (make 2)

Row 1: With MC, fsc 32 (40, 44, 48, 56, 64), turn.

Rows 2-11: Ch 1, sk first st, cl in next st, *sk next st, cl in next st, rep from * across, turn. (16 (20, 22, 24, 28, 32) cl)

Switch to CC.

Rows 12-21: Ch 1, sk first st, cl in next st, *sk next st, cl in next st, rep from * across, turn.

Switch to MC.

Rows 22-31: Ch 1, sk first st, cl in next st, *sk next st, cl in next st, rep from * across, turn.

Rep Rows 12-31 for more times for a total of 111 rows.

Fasten off.

Assembly

Block the fronts and back. Lay the 2 front panels on top of the back panel. Seam the shoulders. Seam the side seams, leaving 6 (6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5)” open for the armhole.

Sleeves

With RS facing, attach MC at side seam at the underarm.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, evenly work 52 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72) sc around the armhole, sl st into first st to join. Do not turn. (52 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72) sc)

Rnds 2-11: Ch 1, *sk next st, cl in next st, rep from * around, sl st into first st to join, turn. (26 (28, 30, 32, 34, 36) cl)

Switch to CC.

Rnd 12 (dec, RS): Ch 1, *sk next st, sc in next st, triple dc tog (combines 2 cl into 1), [sk next st, cl in next] 11(12, 13, 14, 15, 16) times, rep from * once more, sl st into first st to join, turn. (24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34) cl remain)

Rnds 13-21: Ch 1, *sk next st, cl in next st, rep from * around, sl st into first st to join, turn.

Switch to MC.

Rnd 22 (dec, RS): Ch 1, *sk next st, sc in next st, triple dc tog, [sk next st, cl in next st] 10 (11, 12, 13, 14, 15) times, rep from * once more, sl st into first st to join, turn. (22 (24, 26, 28, 30, 32) cl remain)

Switch to CC

Fasten off.

Rep for second sleeve.

Finishing

Edging:

With RS facing, attach MC at the front bottom corner of the cardigan.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, evenly sc around the entire cardigan, working 3 sc into the front corners, sl st into first st to join.

Fasten off. Weave in all ends.
