Sunlace Bandana

Pair the joyful tones of late-summer sunshine with delicate stitches in the Sunlace Bandana! This airy bandana is a fantastic between-season staple for tying back long hair on those unseasonably warm fall days. Use a fine weight yarn and a floral lace stitch to create a flowy, breathable fabric. It adds a touch of free-spiritedness to any outfit, and would pair particularly well at a festival, picnic or any outing with friends.

Size: 16” wide × 9” height, after blocking

Gauge:

16 sts = 4” [10 cm] in tr st

8 rows = 6” [15 cm]

(24 sts and 8 rows = 6” [15 cm] in tr st)

Materials

Yarn: Hobby Store Fine Cotton (100% Premium Mercerized Cotton; 371 yards [340 meters] / 3.53 ounces [100 grams]): 232 Mustard,1 skein

Hook: US size G/6 4.0 mm

Notions: Tapestry needle, measuring tape, blocking mat, blocking pins

Abbreviations

Tr-cl: Treble cluster

Special Stitches

Tr-cl: Yo twice, insert hook in indicated ch-sp, pull up a loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) twice, *yo twice, insert hook in same ch-sp, pull up a loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) twice, rep from * one more time, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook.

Flower stitch: In indicated ch-sp, *tr-cl, ch 2, rep from * 2 more times, tr-cl in same ch-sp. [4 tr-cl, 3 ch-2 sps per flower]

V st: (Dc, ch 1, dc) all in same st/ch-sp

Large V st: (Dc, ch 2, dc) all in same st/ch-sp

Picot: ch 3, sl st into the front loop of the last sc made.

Pattern Notes

  1. Ch 4 counts as a dc plus ch-1 for odd number rows.
  2. Ch 4 counts as a tr for even number rows.
  3. St counts for tr sts also include turning ch-4.
  4. For odd number rows, V st when worked in flower st, is always worked in the center ch-2 sp of flower st (there are total 3 ch-2 sps for each flower st).
  5. For even number rows, flower st and dc are always worked in ch-1 sp of V st.

Pattern

Ch 4

Row 1 (WS): Dc in last ch from the hook. (1 V st)

Row 2 (RS): Ch 4 (counts as a st here and throughout), turn, flower st in V st, tr in third ch of ch-4. (1 flower st and 2 tr.)

Row 3: Ch 4, turn, dc in same st as ch-4, ch 2, V st in flower st (center ch-2 sp), ch 2, V st in fourth ch of ch-4.  (3 V sts and 2 ch-2 sps)

Row 4: Ch 4, turn, flower st in V st, dc in next V st, flower st in next V st, tr in third ch of ch-4. (2 flower sts, 1 dc and 2 tr.)

Row 5: Ch 4, turn, dc in same st as ch-4, ch 2, V st in flower st, ch 2, V st in next dc, ch 2, V st in flower st, ch 2, V st in fourth ch of ch-4.  (5 V sts and 4 ch-2 sps)

Row 6: Ch 4, turn, flower st in V st, dc in next V st, flower st in next V st, tr in third ch of ch-4. (3 flower sts, 2 dc and 2 tr.)

Row 7: Ch 4, turn, dc in same st as ch-4, *ch 2, V st in next flower st, ch 2, V st in next dc, rep from * one more time, ch 2, V st in flower st, ch 2, V st in fourth ch of ch-4.  (7 V sts and 6 ch-2 sps)

Row 8: Ch 4, turn, *flower st in V st, dc in next V st, rep from * to last V st, flower st in last V st, tr in third ch of ch-4. (4 flower sts, 3 dc and 2 tr.)

Row 9: Ch 4, turn, dc in same st as ch-4, *ch 2, V st in next flower st, ch 2, V st in next dc, rep from * to last flower, ch 2, V st in last flower st, ch 2, V st in fourth ch of ch-4.  (9 V sts and 8 ch-2 sps)

Rep row 8 and row 9 to row 16 or until desired size. (8 flower sts, 7 dc and 2 tr.)

Please note that if you change the total number of rows, it will also change the stitch count.

Row 17: Ch 4, turn, dc in same st as ch-4, *ch 1, large V st in next flower st, ch 1, large V st in next dc, rep from * to last flower, ch 1, large V st in last flower st, ch 1, large V st in fourth ch of ch-4.  (17 large V sts and 16 ch-1 sps)

Do NOT fasten off. Proceed to ties.

Ties

Row 1: Ch 61, sc in 2nd ch from the hook and each ch, working in back bumps only. Now work across the last row of bandana, sc in dc of large V st, 3 sc in ch-2 sp of large V st, *1 sc in next ch-1 sp, 3 sc in next ch-2 sp of large V st, rep from * to last dc, sc in last dc, ch 61, sc in 2nd ch from the hook and each ch, working in back bumps only. (60 sc for each tie and 69 sc along top edge, total 189 dc)

Do NOT fasten off. Proceed to picot edging.

Picot Edging

Now work along the sides of bandana.

Row 1: Add sc evenly along the bandana sides, add 3 sc at the bandana point, at the same time, add picots every 6 sts. Also add picot in the centre sc of 3 sc added at the point.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block to the measurements.
