Hemlock Hat

Gauge: 14 sts and 16 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Sc.

Materials

Yarn: Berroco Ultra Alpaca (50% Alpaca; 50% Wool; 216 yards [198 meters]/100 grams): Sweet Nectar Mix (A, 1 (1, 1) balls), Kaffir Mix (B, 1 (1, 1) balls), Winter White (C, 1 (1, 1) balls)

Hook: US size K/10½ (6.5mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle; stitch marker; clover large pom-pom maker (size 33/8”)

Abbreviations

camel hdc – camel half double crochet

ch – chain stitch

fi – fair isle stitch

fi2tog – fair isle stitch 2 together

sc – single crochet

sl – slip

Special Stitches

Camel Half Double Crochet (camel hdc)

Yo, insert hook in next st, but not through the front OR back loop, but instead an extra loop that is behind the next st, yo, draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 3 loops on hook.

Fair Isle Stitch (fi)

Insert hook between the 2 lines that make up the “V” of the next sc (the hook must go underneath both loops AND the horizontal bar at the back of your work), yo, draw up a loop (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops on hook.

Fair Isle Stitch 2 Together (fi2tog)

*Insert hook between the 2 lines that make up the “V” of the next sc (the hook must go underneath both loops AND the horizontal bar at the back of your work), yo, draw up a loop** (2 loops on hook); rep from * to ** once more (3 loops on hoop), yo, pull through 3 loops on hook.

Pattern Notes

The Ribbed Band is worked in rows and seamed together. The Hat is worked in the round from the bottom to top. The top of the hat is gathered together to close it up.

With A, ch 8 (9, 10).

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and next 6 (7, 8) sts, turn. (7 (8, 9) sts)

Row 2: Sl st in next 7 (8, 9) sts, turn. (7 (8, 9) sts)

Row 3: Ch 1, camel hdc in same st, camel hdc in next 6 (7, 8) sts, turn. (7 (8, 9) sts)

Rows 4-73 (79, 79): Rep Rows 2-3.

Fasten off. Weave in loose ends.

Using the tapestry needle, seam the edge of the ribbed band creating a circle.

Hat

Note: When working with two colors, carry the yarn that you’re not working with at the moment at the back of the work.

Place the Ribbed Band sideways with the ribbed side facing outwards. Attach A to the back of the hat at seam.

Finishing

Weave C through ends of last rnd, pull tightly and sew the hole shut.

Weave in loose ends.

Block hat to size and shape.

Pom-pom (make 1)

With A, create one pom-pom. Once completed, trim pom-pom to measure 3 (3.25, 3.25)”.

Attach the pompom to the top of the hat over the seam just created.
