Denver Sunset Shawl

Go strolling to appreciate nature’s beautiful change, and wrap up in this eye-catching, warm shawl while you go. It’s worked from the bottom up in a repeating shell stitch that will fly off your hook.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 68” wide x 26” long

Gauge: 10 sts and 5 rows = 4” [10 cm] in dc

Materials

Yarn: Lion Brand Landscapes (100% Acrylic; 147 yards [134 meters]/100 grams): 204 Desert Spring, 5 balls

Hook: US size M/N (9.0mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Special Stitches

V st (dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated stitch

Big Shell (4 dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in indicated stitch

Pattern Note

The ch 3 at the beginning of each row counts as the first dc of the row.

Pattern

Row 1: Ch 4, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in 4th ch from hook, turn – 4 dc.

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in first st, ch 5, 2 dc in last st, turn – 4 dc.

Row 3: Ch 3, (dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in first st, sc in ch-1 sp of Row 1 enclosing the ch-5 loop of Row 2, (4 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in last st, turn – 12 dc.

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in first st, ch 5, V st in next sc st, ch 5, 2 dc in last st, turn – 6 dc.

Row 5: Ch 3, (dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in first st, sc in next ch-1 sp of Row 3 enclosing the next ch-5 loop of Row 4, Big Shell in ch-1 sp of next V st, sc in next ch-1 sp of Row 3 enclosing the next ch-5 loop of Row 4, (4 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in last st, turn – 20 dc.

Row 6: Ch 3, dc in first st, (ch 5, V st in next sc) twice, ch 5, 2 dc in last st, turn – 8 dc.

Row 7: Ch 3, (dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in first st, *sc in next ch-1 sp of Row 5 enclosing the next ch-5 loop of Row 6, Big Shell in ch-1 sp of next V st, sc in next ch-1 sp of Row 5 enclosing the next ch-5 loop of Row 6, (4 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in last st, turn – 28 dc.

Row 8: Ch 3, dc in first st, ch 5, *V st in next sc, ch 5; rep from * across, 2 dc in last st, turn – 10 dc.

Row 9: Ch 3, (dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in first st, sc in next ch-1 sp of row before last row enclosing the next ch-5 loop of last row, *Big Shell in ch-1 sp of next V st, sc in next ch-1 sp of row before last row enclosing the ch-5 loop of last row; rep from * across, (4 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in last st, turn – 36 dc.

Rows 10-43 (or to desired width): Rep Rows 8-9.

Row 44: Ch 3, dc in first st, ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp of next Big Shell, ch 2, *3 dc in next sc, ch 2, sc in ch-1 sp of next Big Shell, ch 2; rep from * across row, finishing last rep with ch 1, 2 dc in last st, turn – 65 dc.

Edging

Working across Row 44, ch 1, sc in each st, sc in each ch-1 sp, and 2 sc in each ch-2 sp, work 1 more sc in last st of row, sc evenly along side as follows: *ch 2, dc in top of last/first st of next row; rep from * to point, 3 sc in point, sc evenly along last side as follows: **ch 2, dc in top of last/first st of next row; rep from ** to top of shawl, work 1 more sc in the same st as the first st of the rnd, join. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

      To start the shawl, begin with Row 1 – Ch 4, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in 4th ch from hook, turn – 4 dc.

  • I am confused about the edging instructions. It says sc evenly along side as follows:*ch 2, dc in top of last/first st of next row, rep from * to point. This is confusing to me since it sc evenly but then says ch 2 and dc. Could you help me out please. The rest of the pattern went great until I got to the edging. Thanks, Leila
