Postcard from Spring T-shirt

Granny squares are quick to make and always add a dash of fashion to your spring wardrobe. This simple tee is designed so that each color is a slight variation on the traditional granny and its join-as-you-go technique ensures there is not a lot of sewing up to do at the end.

Sizes: S (M, L, XL), finished bust size 36 (42, 48, 54)”

Gauge: Finished square should measure 3” on the diagonal from point to point.

Materials

Yarn:

Medium yarn weight Plymouth Cashmere de Cotone (90% Cotton, 10% Cashmere Goat; 125 yards [114 meters]/50 grams): #0010 Tan (A), 6 (7, 7, 8) balls; #0006 Coral (B), 2 (3, 3, 4) balls; #0005 Yellow (C), 2 (3, 3, 4) balls

Hook: US size G/6 (4.0 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Special Stitches

Picot: Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook

Pattern

Square A

With A, ch 4, join into a ring with sl st in first ch.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, (3 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 times, join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch – 12 dc.

Rnd 2: Sl st in next 2 dc and in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch-2 sp, ch 1, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1] 3 times, join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch.

Fasten off.

Square B

With B, ch 4, join into a ring with sl st in first ch.

Rnd 1: Rep Rnd 1 of Square A.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, [dc in next 3 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch – 28 dc.

Fasten off.

Square C

With C, ch 4, join into a ring with st sl in first ch.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, join rnd with sl st in first sc – 6 sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st as rnd join and in each sc around, join rnd with sl st in first sc – 12 sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, 4 dc in same st as rnd join, dc in next 2 sc, (5 dc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc) 3 times, join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch – 28 dc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st as rnd join and in next dc, 3 sc in next dc, (3 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 6 dc) 3 times, join rnd with sl st in first sc.

Fasten off.

Half Squares (used only at neckline)

With A, ch 4, join into a ring with sl st in first ch.

Row 1: Ch 3, (3 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) in ring, ch 3, turn – 8 dc.

Row 2: Work 2 dc in first dc, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, sk 3 dc, 4 dc in last dc.

Fasten off.

To Join As You Go

Square A

On the final rnd, hold the square next to the square(s) you wish to connect to. On the corners, replace 1 ch of the corner ch-2 with a sl st to the corner of the adjacent square(s). For the sides, replace the ch-1 between corners with a sl st in the center of the side of the square you want to connect to.

Square B

On the final rnd, hold the square next to the square(s) you wish to connect to. On the corners, replace 1 ch for the corner ch-2 with a sl st to the corner of the adjacent square(s). For the sides, sl st to the center of the side of the adjacent square after the second of the 3 side dc.

Square C

On the final rnd, hold the square next to the square(s) you wish to connect to. On the corners, sl st in the corner of the adjacent square after the second of the 3 corner scs. For the sides, sl st to the center of the side of the adjacent square after the third of the 6 side sc.

T-shirt

Crochet and join squares as shown in the diagram for your size.

Sizes S (L) only

Have three half squares for the neck opening, front and back.

Sizes M (XL) only

Have 4 half squares for the neck opening, front and back.

All Sizes

Excluding the half squares at the neck opening, in all other instances where you see a half square on the diagram, it means it’s folded and the other half is showing on the other side.

Finishing

Neck Edging

Sizes M (XL) only

Sew half of each edge half square together to narrow the neck opening.

All Sizes

Work 1 rnd even in sc around neck opening.

Hem and Sleeve Edgings

Work 1 rnd even in sc around hem and each sleeve hem, working an sc2tog decrease in the valley where each square is joined to the next and (2 sc, picot, sc) in each point.

Weave in all ends. yarn ball
