Road Trip Throw

Inspired by iconic drives down Route 66 with the top down, this blanket recalls the colors of the era, as well as the need to keep warm when it gets chilly. You’ll whip this up quickly thanks to the join-as-you-go design, and it’s easy to adjust the size by adding or subtracting hexagons.

Size: 37.5” x 41”

Gauge: 1 finished hexagon = 4” [10 cm] diameter at widest point

Materials

Yarn:

Bulky weight yarn Lion Brand Lion’s Pride Woolspun (80% Acrylic, 20% Wool; 127 yards [116 meters]/100 grams): 98 Fisherman (MC), 6 balls; 102 Aquamarine (CC1), 2 balls; 130 Honey (CC2), 1 ball; 132 Pumpkin (CC3), 1 ball.

Hook: US size K/10.5 (6.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in motifs consisting of 2 rnds. It is suggested that you finish Rnd 1 of all the motifs before beginning Rnd 2, as you will be joining them together while working Rnd 2.

Use Layout graphic and photo as a guide for color placement.

Pattern

Rnd 1 of Motifs (make 38 with CC1, 33 with CC2, and 33 with CC3)

Rnd 1: Make a magic circle, ch 2, dc2tog in the ring, ch 3, (dc3tog in ring, ch 3) 5 times, join to dc2tog with sl st.

Break yarn and fasten off.

In Rnd 2, you will join the motifs together at the corners (ch-2 sps), so there are variations on how to work Rnd 2.

First Motif

Rnd 2: With MC, join to any ch-3 sp of a CC3 motif, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-3 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same ch-3 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each rem ch-3 sp around, join to top of ch-3 with sl st.

Break yarn and fasten off.

Additional Motifs

Rnd 2: With MC, join to any ch-3 sp of the next motif, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-3 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same ch-3 sp, *(3 dc, ch 1) in next ch-3 sp, remove hook from loop, insert hook in ch-2 sp of motif to be joined to, reinsert hook in loop, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch-3 sp; rep from * as needed to attach to surrounding motifs, then (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each rem ch-3 sp around, join to top of ch-3 with sl st. Break yarn and fasten off.

Finishing

With MC, join to any unjoined ch-2 sp along the outer edge of the blanket, ch 1, then work around the blanket as follows: (sc, ch 1, sc) in each unjoined ch-2 sp, sc in each dc, sc2tog over each pair of joined ch-2 sps, join.

Fasten off.
