Alexandra Floral Shawl

Fit for a walk in the royal garden, this elegant shawl features little flower petals crocheted into each hexagon. To create this look, lacy hexagon motifs are joined together in the last round to create a whimsical project that’s perfect for a queen.

Skill level: Intermediate

Size: 72” across x 31” long.

Gauge: individual motif – corner sp to corner sp = 8”, side to side = 6.5”

Rnds 1-5= 2.5”.

Materials

Light weight yarnYarn: Bernat Softee Baby (100% Acrylic; 362 yards [331 meters]/140 grams): #30185 Soft Lilac (MC, 3 balls), #02000 White (CC, 1 ball)

Hooks: US size H/8 (5.0mm), US size G/6 (4.0mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers.

Special Stitches

4 dc dec over 4 sts: (Yo, draw up lp, yo, draw through 2 lps) 4 times, yo, draw through all 5 lps, ch 1 to close st.

5 dc dec over 5 sts: (Yo, draw up lp, yo draw through 2 lps) 5 times, yo, draw through all 6 lps, ch 1 to close st.

Magic Ring: Cross yarn to form ring, ch 1, work designated number of sts in ring, pull end of yarn to tighten ring,

Cl st (cluster stitch): Ch 3, hdc in 3rd ch from hook.

Pattern Notes

Motifs are joined together as you go while working the last rnd. Place marker in front side of first motif to help keep track of where you are. Follow chart below for the motif joining sequence.

The joining directions are written below and are divided in sections in order to help keep it as simple as possible. The actual joining is not difficult once you get started.

Pattern

Use MC and larger hook.

First Motif

Rnd 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, 12 sc in ring, tighten ring, join with sl st in first sc. (12 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, [ch 7, sk next st, sc in next st] around, ch 3, tr in first sc to join. (6 ch-sp)

Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 4 dc in first ch-sp, [ch 3, 5 dc] in each ch sp around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. (30 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next 4 sts, [ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, dc in next 5 sts] around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. (30 dc, 12 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 5: Ch 2, work 4 dc dec over the next 4 sts, *[ch 5, sc in next ch-3 sp] twice, ch 5, 5 dc dec over the next 5 sts; rep from * around, join with sl st in top of first dec st. (6 dc dec, 18 ch-5 sps)

Rnd 6: Sl st to 3rd ch of first ch-5 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, [ch 5, sc in next ch sp] around, join with sl st in first sc. (18 ch-5 sps)

Rnd 7: Sl st to 3rd ch of first ch-5 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *ch 5, sc in next ch sp, ch 3, [5 dc, ch 3, 5 dc] in next ch sp, ch 3, sc in next ch sp; rep from * around, ending with ch 3, join with sl st in first sc. (60 dc, 6 ch-5 sps, 12 ch-3 sps)

Fasten off.

Second and Remaining Motifs

Rep Rnds 1-6 of first motif.

Note: Rnd 7 is the joining rnd. Motifs are joined in the ch-3 corner sps and the ch-3 and ch-5 sps along the sides of motifs. The second motif will join to one side. The rest of the motifs will join on 2 or 3 sides. When joining the motifs, Motif A is the current motif you are finishing. Motif B is the motif to your right. Motif C is to the left of B and Motif D is to the left of C. Follow the joining directions below.

One Side Joining

Rnd 7: Sl st to 3rd ch of first ch-5 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, 5 dc in next ch-5 corner sp, ch 1, sl st in corner ch-3 sp of motif B, ch 1, 5 dc in same corner sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next ch-3 sp of motif B, ch 1, sc in next ch-5 sp of motif A, ch 2, sl st in next ch-5 sp of motif B, ch 2, sc in next ch-5 sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next ch-3 sp of motif B, ch 1, 5 dc in next ch-5 corner sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next corner sp of motif B**, ch 1, 5 dc in same corner sp of motif A. Finish rem part of Rnd 7 as for the First Motif.

Fasten off.

Two Side Joining

Rnd 7: Rep the One Side Joining to **, sl st in the adjoining corner sp of motif C, ch 1, 5 dc in same corner sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in ch-3 sp of motif C, ch 1, sc in next ch-5 sp of motif A, ch 2, sl st in next ch-5 sp of motif C, ch 2, sc in next ch-5 sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next ch-3 sp of motif C, ch 1, 5 dc in next ch-5 corner sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next ch-5 corner sp of motif C***, ch 1, 5 dc in same corner sp of motif A. Finish rem part of Rnd 7 as for the first motif.

Fasten off.

Three Side Joining

Rnd 7: Rep Two Side Joining to ***, sl st in the adjoining corner sp of motif D, ch 1, 5 dc in same corner sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in ch-3 sp of motif D, ch 1, sc in next ch-5 sp of motif A, ch 2, sl st in next ch-5 sp of motif D, ch 2, sc in next ch-5 sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next ch-3 sp of motif D, ch 1, 5 dc in next ch-5 corner sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next ch-5 corner sp of motif D, ch 1, 5 dc in same corner sp of motif A. Finish rem part of Rnd 7 as for the first motif.

Fasten off.

Fill in Half Motifs

There will be 3 of these.

Rnd 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, 10 sc in ring, tighten ring, and join in first sc. (10 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, [ch 7, sk next st, sc in next st] around, ch 3, tr in first sc to join. (5 ch sp)

Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 4 dc in first ch-sp, [ch 3, 5 dc] in each ch-sp around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. (25 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next 4 sts, [ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, dc in next 5 sts] 3 times, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, 5 dc dec over the next 5 sts, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. (20 dc, one 5 dc dec, 10 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 5: Ch 2, 4 dc dec over the next 4 sts, [ch 5, sc in next ch-3 sp] twice, *ch 5, 5 dc dec over the next 5 sts, [ch 5, sc in next ch-3 sp] twice; rep from * twice more, [ch 5, sc in next ch-3 sp] twice, ch 5, join in top of beg dec st. (5 dec sts, 14 ch-5 sps)

Rnd 6: Sl st to 3rd ch of first ch-5 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, [ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp] around, join with sl st in first sc. (14 ch sps)   

Note: Follow the directions carefully and it will come out just fine. I have divided up portions of the directions to help keep it clear.

Rnd 7: Sl st to the third ch of first ch-5 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, ch 2, sl st in first ch-5 sp of motif B, ch 2, sc in next ch-5 sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next ch-3 sp of motif B, ch 1,

5 dc in next ch-5 corner sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next corner sp of motif B, sl st in adjoining corner sp of motif C, ch 1, 5 dc in same corner sp of motif A,

ch 1, sl st in next ch-3 sp of motif C, ch 1, sc in next ch-5 sp of motif A, ch 2, sl st in next ch-5 sp of motif C, ch 2, sc in next ch-5 sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next ch-3 sp of motif C, ch 1,

5 dc in next ch-5 corner sp of motif A, ch 1, sl st in next corner sp of motif C, sl st in adjoining corner sp of motif D, ch 1, 5 dc in same corner sp of motif A,

Border

Join with sc in any (non-joined) corner sp, ch 3, hdc in 3rd ch from the hook (cl st made), sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, cl st, sk 2 dc, sc in next ch-sp.

Note: When working over the dc sts you will always make a cl st, sk first 2 dc, sc in the next dc, make a cl st, sk next 2 dc, sc in next ch-sp. For the rest of the border you will work [cl st, sc in next ch sp]. Where 2 motif corners are joined together you will work a sc in first corner sp, cl st, sc in next corner sp.

Work in this pattern stitch evenly around, join in first sc.

Fasten off.

Flowers: Use B and smaller hook.

Rnd 1: Join with sc in FL of any skipped st of Rnd 1, [ch 3, sk next sc, sc in next FL] around, join with sl st in first sc. (6 ch sps)

Rnd 2: Sl st in first ch-3 sp, [ch 2, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, ch 2, sl st in same sp, sl st in next ch-3 sp] in each ch-3 sp around.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends.

Block shawl.
