Sugar & Fig Cowl

Size: Approximately 11” wide x 45” long

Gauge: 8 Rows = 4” [10 cm]; 3½ Repeats = 4” [10 cm]

Materials

Yarn: Berroco Boboli Lace (42% Wool, 35% Acrylic, 23% Vicose; 350 yards [320 meters]/100 grams): #4390 Sunrise, 2 balls

Hook: US size H/8 (5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle; stitch markers

Special Stitches

6 Double Crochet Fan Stitch (Fan): (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in indicated place.

4 Double Crochet Shell V-Stitch (Sh): (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in indicated place.

Tilted Shell Stitch (Tilted Sh): (sc, ch 3, dc, tr) in indicated place.

Pattern Notes

Foundation is worked in short stacked rows to create a scalloped and elastic circle that the rest of the cowl is built.

Body of the cowl is worked in joined rounds off one side of the stacked row foundation. Look for the hole at the base of the treble crochet rows when working Rnd 1.

Use Stitch marker to mark first stitch of Rnd.

Foundation

Row 1: Ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook.

Row 2: Ch 3, turn, (dc, tr) in top of sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in top of tr.

Rows 4-79: Rep Rows 2-3.

Row 80: Ch 3, turn, (dc, tr) in top of sc, without twisting, sl st to base of Row 1 to form circle. Do not fasten off – 40 Scallops along foundation.

Body

Rnd 1: Begin working along side of foundation rows, ch 3, place marker in 3rd ch just made, turn, dc in side of first sc row, (sk next tr row, Sh in next sc row) 39 times, sk last tr row, 2 dc in first sc row, ch 1, sl st to top of beginning ch-3 – 40 Shs.

Rnd 2: Turn, (sl st, ch 3, 2 dc) in same ch-1 sp as join, (sk next 2 sts, sc before next Sh, sk next 2 sts, Fan in next ch-1 sp) 39 times, sk next 2 sts, 3 dc first ch-1 sp, ch 1, sl st to top of beginning ch-3 – 40 Fans, 40 sc.

Rnd 3: Turn, (sl st, ch 3, dc) in same ch-1 sp as join, (sk next 7 sts, Sh next ch-1 sp) 39 times, sk next 7 sts, 2 dc in first ch-1 sp, ch 1, sl st to top of beginning ch-3 – 40 Shs.

Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2.

Rnds 5-22: Rep Rnds 3-4 – 11 Rows of motifs with 40 motifs in each.

Rnd 23 (Edging): Ch 1, turn, Tilted Sh in first ch-1 sp, (sk next 7 sts, Tilted Sh in next ch-1 sp) 39 times, sl st to first sc of rnd. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends and block gently.
