Sandstone Shawl

Sandstone is the shawl that utilizes yarn that varies in thickness to achieve a textured and lacy look. Tassels added to the center of the shawl add visual interest alongside the open diamond motifs.

Time: 1 week

Skill Level: Easy / Intermediate

Size: Approx. 79 x 22” [200 x 56cm]

Gauge: 9 dc = 2.5” [6 cm]. (Gauge is not crucial for this project)

Materials

Yarn: King Cole Opium Chunky [Weight 5 Bulky] (54% Cotton, 42% Acrylic, 4% Polyamide; 273 yards [250 meters]/100 grams): Sandstone 1805 (A, 6 balls)

Hook: Size 7 [4.5mm]

Pattern Notes

  • The foundation ch can be substituted for a foundation double crochet of 85sts..
  • You may wish to recount stitches at the end of each row just to ensure the number of required stitches are correct as you work.
  • You may find it useful to add a stitch marker into the first and last st of your row, moving the stitch marker up as you work.
  • The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as the first dc, this can be substituted with a ch 2 if you have a looser tension and it produces too big a gap.

Pattern

With A; ch 88,

Row 1: 1 dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as a st), 1 dc in each ch across, turn. (85 sts)

Rows 2 – 3: Ch 3, 1 dc in each st across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 14 sts, *ch 3, skip 2 sts;* 1 dc in next 51 sts, repeat from * to * once more, 1 dc in last 15 sts, turn. (81sts, 2 ch-3 sps)

Row 5: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 13 sts, *skip next st, ch 3, 1 sc in ch-3 sp, ch 3, skip next st;* 1 dc in next 49 sts repeat from * to * once more, 1 dc in last 14 sts, turn. (77 dc, 2 sc, 4  ch-3 sps)

Row 6: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 12 sts, *skip next st, [ch 3, 1 sc in ch-3 sp] twice, ch 3, skip the next st;* 1 dc in next 47 sts, repeat from * to * once more, 1 dc in last 13 sts, turn. (73 dc, 4 sc, 6 ch-3 sps)

Row 7: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 11 sts, *skip next st, [ch 3, 1 sc in the ch-3 sp] three times, ch 3, skip the next st;* 1 dc in next 45 sts, repeat from * to * once more, 1 dc in last 12 sts, turn. (69 dc, 6 sc, 8 ch-3 sps)

Row 8: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 11 sts, *1 dc in ch-3 sp, [ch 3, 1 sc in ch-3 sp] twice, ch 3, 1 dc in next ch-3 sp;* 1 dc in next 45 sts, repeat from * to * once more, 1 dc in ch-3 sp, 1 dc in last 11 sts, turn. (73 dc, 4 sc, 6 ch-3 sps)

Rows 11 – 22: Repeat rows 5 – 10 twice.

Row 23: Ch 3, 1 dc in each st across; working 2 dc in each ch-3 sp, turn.

Rows 24 – 25: Ch 3, 1 dc in each st across, turn.

Rows 26 – 158: Repeat rows 4 – 25 six times. On the last row, fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing

Block to measurements.

Add tassels to the centre stitches of the shawl (43rd st of each row) Cut 120 lengths of 7” (18cm) to make tassels, using 3 strands for each tassel, add a tassel to the first and last st of your shawl then to each 3rd row (leaving 2 rows in between with no tassel).
