Yarn: Lion Brand Cover Story Lazy Days (100% polyester; 125 yards [114 meters] / 8.8 ounces [250 grams]): #147AM Eggplant (2 balls),

Hook: US size H/8/5.0 mm

Notions: Several stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors (Optional: Permanent black marker)

Special Stitches

Standing folding slip stitch (standing folding sl st): With lp on hook, insert hook in back lp of indicated st and in unworked lp at base of same st, yo, pull lp up through all lps on hook.

Folding slip st (folding sl st): Insert hook in indicated st and in unworked lp at base of same st, yo, pull lp up through all lps on hook.

Folding single crochet (folding sc): Insert hook in back lp of indicated tr and in unworked lp at base of same st, yo, pull up lp, yo, pull through all lps on hook.

Standing treble crochet (standing tc): With lp on hook, yo twice, insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up lp, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] 3 times.

Standing folding single crochet (standing folding sc): With lp on hook, insert hook in back lp of indicated tr and in unworked lp at base of same st, yo, pull up lp, yo, pull through all lps on hook.

Special Techniques

Back Bar or Back bump of chain: With indicated ch RS facing, sk both front and back lps of ch, insert hook from front to back through next bar or bump of chain.

Invisible join: After last stitch is made, cut yarn leaving an 8-inch tail. Lengthen lp on hook until yarn tail is pulled up through top of stitch. Working in beg sts of rnd, sk first st, insert hook from front to back under both lps of next st, yo with yarn tail (see Photo 8) and pull to front, insert hook from back to front through center of top 2 lps of last st of rnd, yo with yarn tail and pull to WS (see Photo 9). Fasten off yarn tail on WS to secure.

(Note: Where tr increases are made in same st, work folding sc for all sts in same unworked lp of base of same stitch.)

Pattern Notes

Right side facing (RS facing): All rounds or partial rnds are worked with right side facing, unless otherwise stated.

Weave in ends as work progresses.

Chain 2 (ch 2): Chain 2 at beginning of round counts as an hdc unless otherwise noted.

Leaf motifs are worked in rounds or partial rounds from the center outward.

Rounds are not joined unless otherwise stated.

Leaf Motif (Make 4)

Ch 14.

Rnd 1: (RS): Beg at top of leaf, sk first ch, place a st marker in lower lp of first ch from hook to mark leaf tip, sk marked ch, working in back lp of chs, sc in next ch, place a st marker in front lp of sc just made, sc in next 12 chs, place a st marker in back lp of last sc made to mark leaf bottom, sc in same ch where last sc was made, turn to WS, {Optional designer tip: use a permanent marker to place a dot on back bar or bump (see Special Techniques) of next 9 chs  to mark hook placement for Rnd 3 (see Photo 1)}, turn to RS, working in back lp of chs on opposite side of foundation ch, sl st in next 12 chs, do not join, do not fasten off, turn to WS. (14 sc, 12 sl sts)

Partial Rnd 2: With WS facing (see Photo 2), working from right to left in back lps of last 12 sl sts made of rnd 1, ch 2 (see Pattern Notes), dc in next st, tc in next 10 sts, rem sts are unworked. Fasten off.  (see Photo 3) (1 hdc, 1 dc, 10 tc)

Partial Rnd 3: With RS of rnd 2 facing, fold WS of sts against RS of rnd 1, working in back lps of rnd 2 sts and in front lps of rnd 1 sc, with lp on hook, sk marked ch of rnd 1, insert hook in top of beg ch-2 and in marked sc (see Photo 4), yo, pull lp up through lp on hook to complete as a standing folding sl st (see Special Stitches), folding sl st (see Special Stitches) in next 2 sts, folding sc (see Special Stitches) in next st, place a stitch marker in back lp of sc just made, folding sc in next 8 sts, working in back lp of sts, 2 sc in next marked st (leaf bottom), 2 sc in next st (see Photo 5), [sc in marked back bar (see Photo 6) of next st] 9 times, [sl st in back lp of next st] 3 times (see Photo 7), (sc, ch 1, sc) in marked ch of rnd 1, place a st marker in ch-1 just made to mark leaf tip, using invisible join (see Special Techniques) join in beg sl st. Fasten off. (6 sl sts, 9 folding sc,15 sc)

Partial Rnd 4: Working in front lp of sts, sk first 3 folding sl sts OF LAST RND, standing tc (see Special Stitches) in next marked st, (do not remove marker from st), tc in next 8 sts, (2 tc in next st) 4 times, tc in next 9 sts. Fasten off. (26 tc) Note: Remaining 3 sts of rnd 3 are not worked.

Partial Rnd 5: With Rnd 4 sts RS facing, fold WS of sts against RS of Rnd 3, working in back lps of tc of last rnd and in unworked back lp of marked sc at base of same tc, standing folding sl st in first tc and in marked sc of rnd 3, [folding sl st in next st] twice, folding sc in next st, place marker in back lp of sc just made, folding sc in next 5 sts,  [folding sc in next st, folding sc in next tc and in same back lp where last folding sc was made] 4 times, folding sc in next 6 sts, [folding sl st in next st] 3 times. Fasten off. (20 folding sc, 6 folding sl st) Optional: If desired, use a permanent marker to place a dot on each of the 4 back lps where 2 folding sc are made in the same back lp, to more easily see where to insert the hook.

Partial Rnd 6: Working in front lp of sts at beg of last rnd, sk first 3 sl sts, standing tc in next marked, do not remove marker, tc in next 7 sts, [2 tc in next st] 4 times, tc in next 8 sts. Fasten off. (24 tc) Note: Remaining 3 sts of rnd 5 are not worked.

Partial Rnd 7: With Rnd 6 sts RS facing, fold WS of sts against RS of Rnd 5, working in back lps of tc of last rnd and in unworked back lp of sc at base of same tc, standing folding sl st in first tc and in marked sc, (folding sl st in next st) twice, folding sc in next st, place a stitch marker in back lp of sc just made, folding sc in next 4 sts, [folding sc in next st, folding sc in next tc and in same back lp where last folding sc was made] 4 times, folding sl st in next 5 sts (folding sl st in next st) 3 times. Fasten off. (18 folding sc, 6 folding sl st)

Partial Rnd 8: Working in front lp of sts of last row, sk first 3 sts, standing tc in next marked sc, do not remove marker, tc in next 6 sts, [2 tc in next st] 4 times, tc in next 7 sts. Fasten off. (22 tc) Note: Remaining 3 sts of rnd 7 are not worked.

Partial Rnd 9: With Rnd 8 sts RS facing, fold WS of sts against RS of Rnd 7, working in back lps of tc of last rnd and in unworked back lp of sc at base of same tc, standing folding sc (see Special Stitches) in first tc and in marked sc, place a st marker in sc just made, folding sc in next 6 sts, *folding sc in next st, folding sc in next tc and in same back lp where last folding sc was made*, folding sc in next st, place a st marker in sc just made, folding sc in next tc and in same back lp where last folding sc was made, rep from * to * twice, folding sc in next 7 sts, place a st marker in last sc made. Fasten off leaving a 12-inch yarn tail. (22 folding sc)

Base

Make a magic ring.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 2 (does not count as a st), 8 hdc in ring, join to first hdc. pull tail end tightly to close ring. (8 hdc)

Rnd 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), 2 hdc in first st and in each st around, join in first hdc. (16 hdc)

Rnd 3: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next st, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st] around, join in first hdc. (24 hdc)

Rnd 4: Rep last rnd. Turn base to WS. (36 hdc)

Assembly

  1. With WS of base facing, place marked st at bottom edge of one leaf RS together against last rnd of Base, working through both layers, ch 1, (does not count as a stitch) working through both layers, sc in first st of Base and marked st of leaf, [sc in next st] 3 times, working through one layer, sc in next 5 sts of Base, *place marked st at bottom edge of next leaf RS together against Base, working through both layers, sc in next st of Base and marked st of next leaf, [sc in next st] 3 times, working through one layer, sc in next 5 sts of Base, rep from * twice, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
  2. With WS facing, use yarn tail and tapestry needle to sew marked sts of adjacent leaf side edges together.

Hanging Cords

First Cord: *Make a slip knot and place under WS of any leaf tip, with RS of leaf facing, insert hook in ch-1 sp, place lp on hook and pull to RS (counts as first ch), *ch 40, place a st marker in last ch made, ch 40, ♦with leaf on opposite side of base RS facing, sl st in ch-1 sp of leaf tip. Fasten off. ♦ (81 chs)

2nd Cord: Rep from * to * of First Cord with next leaf, ch 39, bring marked ch of first cord under work, sl st in front lp of marked ch of First Cord, ch 5, sl st in back lp of same marked ch, ch 40, rep from ♦ to ♦ of First Cord.
