Sanibel Shawl

You’ve seen granny square shawls before, but you probably haven’t seen one with such a unique shape. The crisp outlines of the floral motifs are stunning, matched by the angular geometry of the squares’ placement. This shawl skillfully adds a modern touch to a beloved classic.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Shawl: 60″ / [152 cm] width x 32″ / [81 cm] length at the longest point

Gauge: Each Motif = 4″ [10 cm] after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn:

Super fine weight yarn Plymouth Yarn Perlina (100% Extrafine Merino Wool; 251 yards [230 meters]/50 grams): #6 Silver, 7 balls

Hook: US size D (3.25 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

After making the first motif, you can use instructions for motif 2 and join as you go or you can make 64 motifs and sew them together as shown in the diagram afterwards.

Pattern

Motif 1

Ch 8. Make a ring with sl st into the first ch.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 16 sc in ring, sl st in first ch to join.

Rnd 2: Ch 8 (count as dc, ch 5), *sk next sc, dc in next sc, ch 5; rep from * around, sl st in 3rd ch – 8 dc.

Rnd 3: [(Sc, hdc, dc, 2 tr, ch 1, 2 tr, dc, hdc, sc) in next ch-5 sp] 8 times.

Fasten off.

Rnd 4: Attach yarn to next ch-1 sp, (ch 7, sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 11, sl st in next ch-1 sp) 4 times, ending with sl st in first ch-1 sp.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, *work 7 sc in next ch-7sp, (6 sc, ch 3, 6 sc) in next ch-11 sp; rep from * around, ending with sl st in first ch.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, *sc in each and every sc to ch-3 sp, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-3 sp; rep from * around, ending with sc in last 6 sc, sl st into the first ch.

Rnd 7: Ch 4 (count as dc, ch 1), (sk next sc, dc in next sc, ch 1) 6 times, [(dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch-3 sp, (sk next sc, dc in next sc, ch 1) 10 times] 4 times, ending with (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch-3 sp, (sk next sc, dc in next sc, ch 1) 3 times, ending with sl st in 3rd ch.

Fasten off.

Motif 2 and the rest of the motifs

Work as Motif 1 to end of Rnd 6, then work Rnd 7 as follows:

Rnd 7: Ch 4 (count as dc, ch 1), (sk next sc, dc in next sc, ch 1) 6 times, *(dc, ch 1, sl st in corresponding ch-3 sp, ch 1, dc) in next ch-3 sp, (sk next sc, dc in next sc, sl st in corresponding ch-1 sp) 10 times; rep from * as necessary, otherwise work same as Rnd 7 of Motif 1. Fasten off.

Finishing

Follow the diagram for joining motifs row by row, starting with Row 1.

Weave in all ends. Block shawl to size. yarn ball
