Tropical Daze Throw

Transport yourself to the tropics with the bright colors of this gorgeous throw. The geometric design was inspired by patchwork quilts and features a crisp layout of individual squares and triangles.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 36″ x 50″

Gauge: Each square blocked = 4.75″

Each triangle blocked = 6.25″ x 4.25″ x 3″

Materials

Yarn:

Medium weight yarn Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran (100% Acrylic; 201 yards [184 meters]/100 grams): 202 Champagne White (MC), 5 balls; 251 Lipstick Pink (CC1), 3 balls; 222 Buttercup Yellow (CC2), 3 balls

Hook: US size I/9 (5.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

Blanket has 58 squares and 24 triangles, arranged as shown in Diagram.

Triangle motifs are worked in rows, with right side facing at all times.

Border is worked in rounds with right side facing at all times.

All motifs benefit from a steam blocking when finished.

Pattern

Square A (make 30)

With CC2, ch 4, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, (ch 2, 3 dc in ring) 3 times, ch 2, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: With MC, join in any ch-2 sp, ch 5 (counts as tr, ch 1), tr in same sp, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *(tr, ch 1, tr) in next ch-2 sp, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * twice more, join with sl st into 4th ch of beg ch-5. Fasten off.

Rnd 3: With CC1, join in any ch-1 sp, ch 5 (counts as tr, ch 1), tr in same sp, 2 dc in next tr, dc in each of next 5 sts, 2 dc in next tr, *(tr, ch 1, tr) in next ch-1 sp, 2 dc in next tr, dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * twice more, join with sl st into 4th ch of beg ch-5. Fasten off.

Rnd 4: With MC, join in any ch-1 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 1, sc) in same sp, *sc in next 11 sts, (sc, ch 1, sc) in ch-1 corner sp; rep from * around Square, ending with sl st in first sc.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Square B (make 28)

Work as for Square A, substituting CC1 for Rnd 1 and CC2 for Rnd 3.

Triangle A (make 14)

With CC1, ch 3, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.

Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 3 dc in ring, ch 2, 4 dc in ring. Fasten off.

Row 2: With MC, join yarn in top of beg ch-3 from Row 1, ch 4 (counts as tr), tr in same st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, (tr, ch 1, tr) in ch-2 sp, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 2 tr in last st. Fasten off.

RRow 3: With CC2, join yarn in top of beg ch-4 from Row 2, ch 4 (counts as tr), tr in same st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in next tr, (tr, ch 1, tr) in ch-1 sp, 2 dc in next tr, dc in each of next 5 sts, 2 dc in next tr, 2 tr in last tr. Fasten off.

Row 4: With MC, join yarn in top of beg ch-4 from Row 3, ch 2 (counts as sc), sc in same sp, sc in next 11 sts, (sc, ch 1, sc) in ch-1 sp, sc in next 11 sts, 2 sc in last st.

Fasten off yarn and weave in all ends.

Triangle B (make 10)

Work as for Triangle A, substituting CC2 for Row 1 and CC1 for Row 3.

Finishing

Steam block all motifs before joining.

Arrange motifs following assembly diagram. Start in top right corner with first two triangles, then next row of two squares and 2 triangles, and continue attaching rows horizontally, to bottom left corner of diagram. Repeat rows vertically.

To join motifs, hold with RS together. Making sure that stitches line up, whipstitch together, working through back loops only.

Border

With MC and RS facing, join yarn in top right corner.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 3 sc in corner, *work 21 sc evenly across each Triangle to next corner; rep from * around all edges of Blanket, working 3 sc in each corner, join with sl st into first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, work 2 dc in same st, dc in each st around, working 3 dc in each corner st, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

Rnd 3: With CC2, join in any st from Rnd 2, ch 3, dc in each st around, working 3 dc in each corner st, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

Rnd 4: With CC1, rep Rnd 3. Fasten off.

Rnd 5: With MC, join in any st from Rnd 4, ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner st, join with sl st into firrt sc. Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.
