Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked side-to-side in two colors starting at the right front and working around the body in one piece. Sleeves are likewise worked side-to-side, first increasing then decreasing row length for shaping. Pieces are blocked before seaming, then cuff, bottom ribbing, and a shawl collar are added directly to the piece using hdc ribbing in the back bar/third loop.

To change color in bbhdc ribbing, on last stitch of old color, yo, draw up a loop in next st, drop old color to front of work, pick up new color from behind, yo, draw through 3 lps on hook, lift old color up behind hook, yo with new color for next st, catching old color behind hook in yo.

In bbhdc ribbing, turning ch-2 does not count as a stitch.

Hi there! There is this abbreviation listed above:
Back Bar Half-double crochet (bbhdc): half-double crochet worked in the back bar, (also called 3rd loop) of a stitch. The back bar is found when looking at the back side of a row of hdc, lying horizontally under the top loop.

Please let me know if there are other abbreviations you need assistance with, thanks! – Nicola, Editor

Hi Carol, For your gauge swatch, I would reccommend it being at least 5 shells wide (since 3 shells is the repeat and it is good to have fabric on either side of the section you plan to measure). So that would be 4 sts x 5 shells = 20, +3. So chain 23 for your swatch. The pattern tells you how many to chain for the garment pieces. Thanks! Juliette, Designer

I’m having trouble getting the right gauge. The schematic is confusing. Maybe I’m just tired. HA The right front is between 15 1/4″ to 16 1/2″? Is that suppose to go from center of the right front to center of the back? Also can’t seem to get the gauge of repeat (ch multiple of 4+3). i’m try again

Hi Patricia, The garment body is worked in one piece, starting at the right front edge (where the shawl collar is later attached) then you work around the whole body, decreasing & increasing to add arm openings, until you stop at the left front edge. The schematic represents the garment as if it were finished, laid out flat with the fronts folded & the shawl collar overlapped with itself and the arms extended. I don’t know what size you plan to make, so I will use the dimensions for the smallest size in this example: the body is 5″ (right front) + 16.5″ (back) + 5″ (left front, same as right, dimension not on schematic) = 26.5″ overall before shawl collar is added. The shawl collar is 6.5″ wide, and overlapps when worn, so the full body circumference is 33″. Thanks! Juliette, Designer

Patricia, It takes 4 rows to make one vertical repeat (a vertical repeat being one V of CC). 3 shells = 5″ horizontal, 12 rows = 4.25″ vertical. Thanks! Juliette, Designer

Agnes, This is the only garment I have designed in this stitch pattern. You would need to work a swatch in the lighter yarn you want to use, and do the math to enlarge the pattern to suit your needs. Thanks! Juliette, Designer

Hi Dina, You could of course make it in a single color, but the effect of the V’s would be mostly lost, the fabric texture would appear more similar to corner-to-corner crochet. And in order to follow the stitch pattern correctly, you would still need to use two balls of yarn as written. If you want a solid color jacket, I think using two different yarns in the same color but with different textures (i.e. a brushed or fluffy yarn for the MC and a shiny or smooth yarn for the CC) would be very pretty. Thanks! – Juliette, Designer

Hi Dana, Sorry, but I have never recorded a video for this pattern, I do not have a YouTube channel. Make sure you are working each row on the correct side of the fabric – this stitch pattern is unusual in that you do not turn after every row. You work MC across on the right side followed by CC across on the right side (two rows on same side of work, both worked right to left), THEN TURN, then work MC across on the wrong side followed by CC across on the wrong side, THEN TURN, etc. Please note that it takes four rows to make one ‘V’ in CC = one repeat. However, this stitch patern is fully reversible as it is the same two rows repeated over & over that create the pattern. I hope this helps! Juliette, Designer

      Hello Betty! Update:
It’s a little hard to answer, as you do not say what size you are making, and the chain count / # of shells you should have is different for each size.

Assuming you had the correct number of shells until this point (through the right front, & right armhole shaping) then it should continue to be correct. All sizes have 10 shells after the right armhole shaping portion. You add chains for the upper back, and the the qty to chain for each size seems to match the # of shells added. The repeat is ch multiple of 4+3. You chain ch 23 (23, 27, 27, 27, 31) to add 5(5,6,6,6,7) for 15 (15, 16, 16, 16, 17) shells at the end of this row. That looks right to me. 23 = 4*5 +3, 27 = 4*6 +3, & 31 = 4*7 +3.

      Hope that helps! – Nicola
