Botanical Nori Flip Flops

Step into summer with your own customized flip flops featuring crochet flowers and leaves. Minimal sewing is required as the elements are crocheted right onto the straps — photo tutorial included!

Time: Day Project

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Length of flip flop straps.

Gauge: 5 sc = 1” [2.5 cm] in Row 1 of Leaves.

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Knit Picks/WeCrochet Dishie (100% cotton; 190 yards [173 meters]/100 grams): 25785 Jalapeno (MC, 1 ball), 27308 Lilac Mist (CC, 1 ball).

Hook: US size G/6 (4.0 mm)

Notions: Plain rubber flip flops, tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Dslst (dslst) = deep slip stitch

Special stitches

Deep slip stitch (dslst): Slip stitch in round below the working round.

Pattern Notes

  • Row 1 of Leaves is worked around the straps of the flip flop, encasing the straps. See below for photo tutorial.
  • Leaves are worked in pairs over 5 sts. Looser or tighter gauge changes the density of the leaf pairs.
  • Flower is worked in rounds; each petal layer is worked separately and then sewn together.

Pattern

Leaves

Row 1: Attach MC around beg of first flip flop strap. Encapsulating the strap, work in sc along the first strap of the flip flop until the end is reached in a multiple of 5 sts, checking gauge as you go. Rotate flip flop to cont along second strap, working the same number of sc as for the first strap, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as st), *sc in next 2 sc, ch 5, 2 hdc in second ch from hook, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, sl st in FL of next sc (leaf made), ch 5, 2 hdc in second ch from hook, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, sl st in BL of next sc (leaf made), sc in next sc; rep from * across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1 (does not count as st), *sl st in next sc, sl st in open lp (BL) of next sc of Row 1, sl st in open lp (FL) of next sc of Row 1, sl st in next 2 sc, rep from * across. Fasten off.

Flower

Layer 1

Rnd 1: With CC, work (ch 2, dc, tr, dc, sl st) 3 times in adjustable ring. (3 petals)

Fasten off, tighten magic ring.

Layer 2

Rnd 1: With CC, work (ch 2, tr, dtr, tr, sl st) 4 times in adjustable ring. (4 petals)

Fasten off, tighten magic ring.

Layer 3

Rnd 1: With CC, work (ch 2 (counts as st), dc, tr, dc, sl st) 4 times in adjustable ring. (4 petals)

Rnd 2: *Ch 1, 2 sc in next 4 sts, dslst, rep from * around.

Fasten off,

Finishing

Stack petals with the largest petal on the bottom and the smallest one on top. Sew the petals tog. Then sew assembled flower to the point where the straps meet, on top of the toe. Weave in ends.

Repeat all for second flip flop.
