Behind Petals

Rnd 1: With H hook and 30” strand of yarn (left behind flower) working in center of flower *sc between any 2 scs, ch 3, continue from * around evenly spacing 3 more ch 3 spaces, join to beginning sc and fasten off. (4 ch 3 spaces)
Rnd 2: Join MC with a slip stitch in any ch 3 space, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in same space, ch 3, continue from * around, join to beginning sc. (8 ch 3 spaces)
Rnd 3: Slip stitch into ch 3 space, ch 3, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same space, *ch 1, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next space, repeat from * around, join to top of beginning ch 3.
Rnd 4: Slip stitch in next dc and ch 1 space, sc in same space, *5 dc in next ch 1 space, sc in next ch 1 space, repeat from * around, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Rnd 5: With J hook join CC in any sc. Work 1 sc in each sc and dc around. Join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Note: When motif is completed, “open” each petal to form the flower.

Insert Motif (make 72)

With J hook and CC ch 3 to form a ring, ch 6, in ring work [4 dc, ch 3] 3 times, 3 dc in ring, join to 3rd ch of beginning ch 6 and fasten off.

Joining

With right side facing and CC whip stitch Flower Motifs together. With CC whip stitch Insert Motifs in between Flower Motifs. See Flower Placement Diagram.

Edging

Starting at upper right corner Flower Motif with CC and I hook (sc, ch 2, 2 dc) in 3rd sc after joining, skip 2 sc, *(sc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sc, skip 2 sc, repeat from * until next joining, (sc, ch 2, 2 dc) in joining, skip 2 sc, (sc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sc, skip 2 sc, continue pattern around entire afghan, join to beg sc and fasten off.

Aconite (6 petal yellow buttercup-like flower with large yellow and green stamens):
Rnd 1: With H hook and yellow leave 30” (for behind petals), ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to beginning sc.
Rnd 2: With J hook (sc, ch 3, trc, dtrc, trc, ch 3, sc) in each sc around, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 6 strands each of DMC 307 and 987 wrap strands around needle 4 times and fill in center of the flower with French knots.

Balloon Flower (lavender cup-shaped petals with dark veins and yellow stamens)
Center of Flower, Rnd 1: With H hook and lavender ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to beginning sc.
Rnd 2: With I hook (ch 2, dc, trc, dtrc, trc, dc, hdc) in same sc, *(hdc, dc, trc, dtrc, trc, dc, hdc) in next sc, repeat from * 3 times, join to top of beginning ch 2 and fasten off.
Behind Petals, Rnd 1: With H hook and paddy green sc in between any 2 sc of center of flower, ch 3, evenly space 3 more ch 3 spaces around, join to beginning sc.
Continue with Rounds 2-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 6 strands of DMC 333 make veins as follows: sew strands from center of each petal to top, continue to back of petal, then behind to next petal for all 5 petals.
With two 6 strands of DMC 973 make 1 French knot in center of flower (wrapping thread 5 times around needle before making French knot).

Black-Eyed Susan (5 orange petals with black center and stamens)
Center of Flower: With H hook and black leave 30” (for behind petals), ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Petals: With sea coral (sc, ch 4, 3 trc, ch 4, sc) in each sc, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 6 strands of DMC 310 fill entire center of the flower with French knots.

Blue Flax (5 petals in light blue with light yellow and pale blue stamens)
Center of Flower: With H hook and light blue leave 30” (for behind petals) ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to beginning sc.
Petals: *(Slip stitch, ch 5, 2 trc, ch 5, slip stitch) in each sc, join to beginning slip stitch and fasten off.
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 6 strands each of DMC 828 and 307 fill entire center of the flower with French knots.

Columbine (5 petals in light lavender with dark lavender center and yellow stamens)
Center of Flower: With H hook and lavender leave 30” (for behind petals), ch 5 and form a ring, 10 sc in ring, join to beginning sc and fasten off leaving about 6” of yarn to close up center hole.
Petal: Join light lavender, *(sc, dc, 2 trc) in sc, (2 trc, dc, sc) in next sc to form a petal, repeat from * around, join to beginning sc and fasten off. (5 petals)
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 6” of yarn left weave to close up center hole.
With 6 strands of DMC 973 work 8 French knots in very center of the flower.

Hardy Geranium (6 pink-red petals with light yellow center and pink-red stamens)
Center of Flower: With H hook and maize leave 30” (for behind petals) ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Petals: With H hook and grenadine (sc, ch 3, 3 trc, ch 3, sc) in each sc, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 6 strands of DMC 956 work 6 French knots in very center of the flower (allow some of the yellow center to show.)

Impatiens (8 petals in light color with dark center and dark stamens)
Center of Flower: With I hook and dark color leave 30” (for behind petals) ch 4 and form a ring, 8 sc in ring, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Petals: With J hook and light color (sc, 3 dc) in each sc around, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 6 strands of DMC color to match center of the flower work 8 French knots in center.

Kaffer Lily (6 orange-red petals, orange center with yellow and orange stamens)
Center of Flower: With H hook and orange leave 30” (for behind petals) ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Petals: With hot red and J hook (sc, ch 2, trc, dtrc, trc, ch 2, sc) in each sc around, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 6 strands of DMC 307 and 946 work French knots in center of the flower.

Petunia (5 pink petals, dark center, dark veins and stamens)
Center of Flower: With H hook and cardinal leave 30” (for behind petals) ch 5 and form a ring, 10 sc in ring, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Petals: With baby pink *(sc, ch 3, 2 trc) in a sc, (trc, ch 3, sc) in next sc to form the petal, repeat from * around, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 6 strands of DMC 814 add veins to petals by sewing one long stitch up the middle of the petal, through the top and continue to the back, then work shorter veins in between to middle of next petal. Continue around for all 5 petals. Work 6 french knots in center of the flower.

Poppy (red double row petals with black center and stamens)
Center of Flower: With H hook and black leave 30” (for behind petals), ch 6 and form a ring, 12 sc in ring, join to beginning sc and fasten off leaving about 5” of yarn to close up center hole.
Back Petals: With jockey red working in back loop *(slip stitch, ch 2, 2 dc) in any loop, (2 dc, ch 2, slip stitch) in next loop to form a petal, repeat from * around, join to beginning slip stitch and fasten off. (6 petals)
Front Petals: With jockey red working in front loop *(slip stitch, ch 2, 2 dc) in any loop, (2 dc, ch 2, slip stitch) in next loop to form a petal, skip one loop, repeat from * around, join to beginning slip stitch and fasten off. (4 petals)
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 5” of yarn left weave to close up center hole.
With 6 strands of DMC 310 fill entire center of the flower with French knots.

Rose (various colors with yellow centers and stamens)
Center of Flower: With H hook and maize leave 30” (for behind petals), ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Front Petals: Working in front loop and petal color, (sc, 2 dc) in each loop around, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Back Petals: Working in back loop and petal color, (sc, 3 dc) in each loop around, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
With 6 strands of DMC 307 fill entire center of the flower with French knots.

Sunflower (yellow petals, brown center and stamens)
Center of Flower: With H hook and brown leave 30” (for behind petals), ch 4 and form a ring, 11 sc in ring, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
Petals: With J hook and yellow work in back loop only, (slip stitch, ch 3, trc, ch 3, slip stitch) in each loop, join to beginning slip stitch and fasten off. Note: Front loops are not worked.
Front of Petals: Split orange and use 2 strands. With H hook and orange, (slip stitch, ch 4, slip stitch) in each stitch between front loops and petals, join to beginning slip stitch and fasten off.
Continue with Rounds 1-5 as established in afghan instructions.
