Any good ergonomic hook is better than unsheathed hooks. If that is what you have, try rubbery pencil grips to help ease a tight grip. I found immediate relief using those, also Furl and Aldi hooks, pricey, but worth it.
I use a plastic lap desk to hold large projects off my lap. Really helps during the warm months!
