Mabel Dot Motif Bag

As Emily Brontë beautifully wrote, “Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.” This bag encapsulates the beauty of fall, inviting you to cozy up with your crochet hook while savoring a pumpkin spice latte. The Mabel Dot Motif Purse features circular motifs worked in rich and vibrant colors reminiscent of changing leaves. Each motif is joined together using the convenient join-as-you-go method, allowing you to seamlessly connect the motifs as you progress. Fabric bag

Cut out the following from the fabric:

Body of bag: 35” x 17” (1 pc)

Fabric for attaching d-ring to bag: 5” x 2” (2 pcs)

Fabric for strap (with swivel hook): 25” x 3” (1 pc)

Fabric for drawstring channel: 14” x 5” cm (2 pcs)

Fabric for drawstring tie: 37” x 1.5” (2 pcs)

Fabric for securing the drawstring tie: 5” X 5.5” (2 pcs)

Body of bag

  1. WS facing, fold and press a ½” hem along the breadth of the fabric on both sides. Finish the raw edges with a serger or a zig-zag stitch.
  2. Right sides facing each other, fold fabric in half and sew up each side with a ¼” seam allowance along the length of the fabric, keeping the breadth folded at opening of the bag.
  3. To make the gusset at the bottom, fold each corner of the bag so the side seam is running down the middle of the point. Press it with the iron.
  4. Make a line perpendicular to the seam, 1.5” from the point. This will be the gusset that makes the bottom of the bag flat.
  5. Sew across this line, making sure the gussets are pressed and sewn identically on either side of the seam, to make sure the bag stands perfectly flat.
  6. Turn the bag right side out.

Attach the D-ring to the bag: 5” X 2” (2pcs) cutouts, repeat instructions for both pieces.

  1. WS facing, fold and press a ¼” hem across the perimeter of the fabric.
  2. Fold in half, and insert the D ring.
  3. Leaving ¾” from the straight edge of the D ring, sew across the breadth to secure the D ring between the fabric.
  4. Place it at a distance of 1.5” on the top edge of the bag along the seam equally on both sides. Sew with a ¼” allowance.

Sewing the strap with swivel hook: 25” X 3” (1 pc)

  1. WS facing, fold and press a 1/2” hem across the perimeter of the fabric, pin in place.
  2. Sew across the folded hem on right side.
  3. Fold over strap 1.5” and insert swivel hook, sew to secure in place. Repeat on other side.

Sewing the drawstring channel: 14” x 5” cm (2 pcs)

  1. Fold and press ¼” fabric across the breadth of the fabric on both sides. Finish raw edges across the length of the fabric on both sides. Fold fabric in half and place it along the top of the bag ½” from the inner side. Sew in place. Repeat on other side.

Fabric for drawstring tie: 37” x 1.5” (2 pcs)

Fold and press ¼” fabric across the perimeter of the fabric, pin in place. Sew along the edges, repeat for the other piece of fabric.

To thread the drawstring tie through the channel, pin a safety pin to one end of the drawstring.

Thread it through the drawstring channel on one side of the bag and then through the other side of the channel. Both ends of the drawstring will be on the same side. Remove the safety pin.

Repeat for the other drawstring tie except begin at the opposite side of the bag. Secure the ends with the fabric as explained in the next step.

Securing the drawstring tie: 5” X 5.5” (2 pcs)

Fold in and press edges, place on both edges of the drawstring tie and sew all open edges in place, repeat on the other side.

Finishing

Attach the top border of the crochet bag to the line where it joins the drawstring channel on the fabric bag. Sew in place.
