Northwoods Toddler Poncho

Featuring a subtle texture, this toddler poncho is perfect for cool weather and toddlers on the move.  The ombre gradient of wool/acrylic blend Lion Brand Scarfie yarn in Cranberry/Black creates the feel of buffalo plaid without having to use multiple yarn colors.

Skill Level: Easy

Size:  3T (5T), approx. 14” x 17” (18” x 22”)

Gauge: 13 sts and 13 rows = 4” [10 cm]

Materials

Yarn: Lion Brand Scarfie (78% Acrylic, 22% Wool; 312 yards [285 meters]/150 grams): 205 Cranberry/Black (MC, 2 (3) balls).

Lion Brand Homespun (98% Acrylic, 2% Polyester; 185 yards [169 meters]/170 grams): 373 Black (CC, 1 ball).

Hook: US size J/10 (6.0 mm)    

Notions: Tapestry needle  

Special Stitches

Extended hdc: Yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull up a lp, pull through the first lp on hook, yo, pull through all 3 lps on hook.

Foundation half double crochet (Fhdc): Ch 3, yo, insert hook into first ch, *yo, pull up a lp (3 lps on hook), yo, pull through first lp on hook to create the first ch st (optional: pinch this stitch between the thumb and forefinger of your non-hook hand to hold it open and make it easier to work into; it is the space below the first and 2nd lps on the hook), yo, pull through all 3 lps on the hook to complete the first foundation hdc st, yo, insert hook into the ch st you were pinching to begin the second foundation hdc; rep from * to complete the number of fhdc sts needed.

Front loop only dropped double crochet (Fl drop dc): Dc in the front lp only of the st 3 rows below, sk the st behind the dc made.

Place the fl drop dc in the lp of the st 3 rows below.

The needle marks the loop to work the fl drop dc into.

Sk the stitch behind the fl drop dc.

The fl drop dc form a pattern on the front surface.

Pattern notes

The first and last hdc of each row are worked through both loops to create an even edge.

When chaining to create a new row, the first hdc is placed in the st below the ch, the final hdc of each row is placed in both loops at the top of the ch 2 of the row below.

The pattern is written for a toddler size 2-3T and toddler size 5-6 instructions are shown in parenthesis.

Pattern

Row 1: Using the MC, fhdc 58 (74) (alternatively, ch 60 (76), hdc into 3rd ch from hook until end), turn.

Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in both lps of the st below the ch, bl hdc until the last st, hdc through both lps, turn. (58 (74) sts)

Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in both lps of the st below the ch and across, turn.

Row 4: Rep Row 2.

Row 5: Ch 2, hdc below ch, *(3 hdc, fl drop dc); rep from * to end of row, turn.

Row 6: Rep row 2.

Row 7: Ch 2, hdc below ch, fl drop dc, *(3 hdc, fl drop dc); rep from * to end of row, the last group has 3 hdc followed by an hdc in the top of the ch 2, turn.

Row 8: Rep Row 2.

Row 9: Ch 2, hdc below ch, hdc next st, fl drop dc, *(3 hdc, fl drop dc); rept from * to end of row, the last group has 2 hdc followed by an hdc in the top of the ch 2, turn.

Row 10: Rep Row 2.

Row 11: Ch 2, hdc below ch, hdc in next 2 st, fl drop dc, *(3 hdc, fl drop dc); rep from * to end of row, the last group has 1 hdc followed by an hdc in the top of beg ch 2, turn.

Row 12: Rep Row 2.

Rows 13-44 (60): Rep Rows 5-12.

Rows 45-49 (61-65): Rep Rows 5-9.

Row 50 (66): Ch 2, hdc in st below ch, bl hdc 15 (21), hdc in both lps of next st, ch 24 (27), sk 24 (27), sl st to next st, hdc in both lps of same st, bl hdc 15 (21), hdc through both lps of the top of beg ch 2, turn.

Row 51 (67): Ch 2, hdc below ch, hdc 2, fl drop dc, (3 hdc, fl drop dc) 3 (5) times, hdc next 1 (0) st, hdc in each ch st across, hdc next 2 (1), fl drop dc, (3 hdc, fl drop dc) 3 (5) times, hdc next st, hdc in last st, turn.

Row 52 (68): Rep Row 2.

Row 53-92 (69-108): Rep Rows 5-12.

Rows 93-95 (109-111): Rep Rows 5-7.

Row 96 (112): Ch 2, extended hdc in same st and across to end of row, ending with the final extended hdc in the top of beg ch 2.

Fasten off.

Collar

Rnd 1: Attach the CC to any st in the neckline opening, ch 2, hdc in same st and in each st around, join with sl st to the top of first hdc.

Rnds 2-5: Ch 2, *fphdc around post of next st, bphdc around post of next st; rep from * around, sl st to first st.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends.
