Three-of-a-Kind Ornament Set

This Three-of-a-Kind Set is the perfect set for the traditionalist looking for simple and basic ornaments. Alternate and switch around colors to make enough unique ones for your entire tree!

Size: Each ornament is approx. 3.5” finished

Gauge: Not important for this project

Materials

Yarn: Red Heart Soft (100% acrylic; 256 yards [234 meters]/141 grams): White (Color A, 1 skein), Light Grey Heather (Color, 1 skein F), Guacamole (Color I, 1 skein), Wine (Color J, 1 skein)
Hook: 1.50 mm or hook to obtain gauge
Notions: Yarn needle, fiberfill for stuffing 3D ornaments, stitch markers (optional)

Variation 1 Pattern Notes

You will use 1.5mm hook on the patterns unless otherwise specified.
Start by creating the initial circle, as it will be sewn onto the ornament at row 14 before decreasing completely.

Variation 1 Pattern

Initial Circle

Using Color A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in first chain. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: Working in the round, 2 sc in each stitch. (16 sts)
Rnd 3: *Sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round. (24 sts)
Rnd 4: *Sc 2, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round. (32 sts)
With a pencil, write the initial on top of the circle lightly.
Using yarn needle and Color J, stitch over the writing carefully to create the stitched initial. Next, weave the yarn in and out every other stitch of the circle to finish.
Using Color J, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in first chain. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: Working in the round, 2 sc in each stitch. (16 sts)
Rnd 3: *Sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round. (24 sts)
Rnd 4: *Sc 2, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round. (32 sts)
Rnd 5: *Sc 3, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round. (40 sts)
Rnds 6-11: Join Color I, drop Color J, sc in each stitch. (40 sts)
Rnd 12: Pick up Color J, fasten off Color I, sc in each stitch. (40 sts)
Mark stitch here, work stitching detail before moving on.

Stitching Detail

Using yarn needle and Color A, weave in and out every other stitch starting at Round 6 up to Rnd 11. Weave in ends inside of ornament.
Rnd 13: Starting at stitch marker, * Sc 3, sc dec, repeat from * to complete round. (32 sts)
Rnd 14: * Sc 2, sc dec, repeat from * to complete round. (24 sts)
Mark stitch here, using yarn needle and Color A, sew on initial circle before moving on. Weave in ends inside of ornament.
Rnd 15: Starting at stitch marker, * Sc, sc dec, repeat from * to complete round. (16 sts)
Rnd 16: Sc dec 8 times. (8 sts)
Rnd 17: Join Color F, drop Color J, sc in each stitch. (8 sts)
Rnds 18-19: Sc in each stitch. (8 sts)

Hanging Loop

Working directly into hanging loop, ch 26, sl st to opposite side of topper, sl st to starting stitch.
Fasten off. Weave in ends. yarn ball

Variation 2 Pattern Notes

The flowers and ruffles are added as embellishments after the ball ornament is created.

Variation 2 Pattern

Using Color A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in first chain. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: Working in the round, 2 sc in each stitch. (16 sts)
Rnd 3: * Sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round. (24 sts)
Rnd 4: * Sc 2, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round. (32 sts)
Rnd 5: * Sc 3, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round. (40 sts)
Rnds 6-12: Sc in each stitch. (40 sts)
Rnd 13: * Sc 3, sc dec, repeat from * to complete round. (32 sts)
Rnd 14: * Sc 2, sc dec, repeat from * to complete round. (24 sts)
Rnd 15: * Sc, sc dec, repeat from * to complete round. (16 sts)
Rnd 16: Sc dec 8 times. (8 sts)
Rnd 17: Join Color F, drop Color A, sc in each stitch. (8 sts)
Rnds 18-19: Sc in each stitch. (8 sts)

Hanging Loop

Working directly into hanging loop, ch 26, sl st to opposite side of topper, sl st to starting stitch.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Flower Back

Using Color J, ch 4, sl st to first chain to join.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in ring.
Rnd 2: Working straight into first stitch, * (sl st, ch 1, dc, ch 1, sl st in same stitch), repeat from * in each stitch, sl st to first stitch to join.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Flower Top

Using Color I, ch 4, sl st to first chain to join.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in ring.
Rnd 2: Working straight into first stitch, * (sl st, ch1, dc, ch 1, sl st in same stitch), repeat from * in each stitch, sl st to first stitch to join.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Using yarn needle, sew flowers together and then onto the center of the ornament.

Ruffles – Top

Row 1: Join Color J on Round 8 as close to the center of the flower as you can, fpsc around each stitch to the opposite side of the flower.
Row 2: Turn, ch 4, dc in same stitch, ch 2, * dc in next stitch, ch 2, dc in same stitch, ch 2, repeat from * to complete the round, ending on a dc in last stitch.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Ruffles – Bottom

Row 1: Join Color I on 2 rows below the first ruffle as close to the center of the flower as you can, fpsc around each stitch to the opposite side of the flower.
Row 2: Turn, ch 4, dc in same stitch, ch 2, * dc in next stitch, ch 2, dc in same stitch, ch 2, repeat from * to complete the round, ending on a dc in last stitch.
Fasten off. Weave in ends. yarn ball

Variation 3 Pattern Notes

How to ‘drop sc stitch’: Locate the stitch in the 2nd row below the current stitch you will work in. Insert your hook into the stitch 2 rows below, yarn over and pull back through, yarn over and pull through the 2 loops on hook. Drop single crochet complete. You will work in next stitch on current row.

Using Color I, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 10 sc in first chain. (10 sts)
Rnd 2: Working in the round, 2 sc in each stitch. (20 sts)
Rnd 3: * Sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round. (30 sts)
Rnd 4: * Sc 2, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round. (40 sts)
Rnd 5: Sc in each stitch. (40 sts)
Rnd 6: Join Color A, drop Color I, * 3 sc, drop sc stitch (see notes), repeat from * to complete round, sl st to ch 1 to join. (40 sts)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in each stitch. (40 sts)
Rnd 8: Drop Color A, pick up Color J, sc 2, drop sc stitch, * sc 3, drop sc stitch, repeat from * until one stitch remains, sc in last stitch, sl st to ch 1 to join. (40 sts)
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in each stitch. (40 sts)
Rnd 10: Drop Color J, pick up Color I, sc, drop sc stitch, * sc 3, drop sc stitch, repeat from * until two stitches remain, sc 2, sl st to ch1 to join. (40 sts)
Rnd 11: Ch 1, sc in each stitch. (40 sts)
Rnd 12: Drop Color I, pick up Color A, * 3 sc, drop sc stitch (see notes), repeat from * to complete round, sl st to ch 1 to join. (40 sts)

Rnd 21: Join Color F, drop Color I, sc in each stitch. (7 sts)

Hanging Loop

Working directly into hanging loop, ch 26, sl st to opposite side of topper, sl st to starting stitch.
Fasten off. Weave in ends. yarn ball
