Pattern Notes

  • This is a cardigan design worked from the bottom up, flat. Once you reach the underarm area, the design is divided into three parts: one for the back and two for the fronts. Each part is worked separately, flat. They are then joined at the shoulders to begin working the sleeves.
  • The cable design appears only on the front part of the cardigan; the back section features only basic stitches, such as double crochet and single crochet, with no cables.
  • When working the cables or front-post (FP) stitches, the dc st located behind the FPtr is always skipped and not worked. Therefore, you’ll find “sk 1 st” written right after the FPtr only in Row 3.
  • You’ll place M1 at the beginning and M2 at the end of the back section, where there is no cable pattern. PM1 and PM2 are included in the total stitch count of 56 (68, 80, 84, 92) (88, 98, 110, 120). You need to move the markers up into the same stitch on the next row.
  • The sleeves are worked in rounds, BUT you must turn your work each round. This means that you will work dc rounds on WS and sc rounds (together with the post stitches) on RS.
  • The cardigan has a band that runs all along the inner edge, which gives more extension to the piece in case you feel it is too narrow.
  • The charts are always a guide; you must follow the specific written instructions for your size.
  • In the “body” part, chains count as stitches.

Left front: 33 (33, 33, 41, 41) (49, 49, 49, 49) sts

Right Front

You will work a decrease at the beginning of each odd row (the ones where we work post stitches) and at the final of each even row as shown in chart 2.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 sc2tog, Continue with the established cabling pattern as established before the division until M1, turn.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each st until 2 sts before end the row, 1 dc2tog, turn.

Row 3 to Row 14 (10, 10, 12, 12) (18, 14, 14, 14): Rep Row 1 and 2 until you have 19 (23, 23, 29, 29) (31, 35, 35, 35) sts.

Row 15 (11, 11, 13, 13) (18, 14,15, 15) to Row 21 (21, 23, 23, 25) (25, 27, 27, 27):  Continue with the established cabling pattern, working 1 dc in each st in even rows and the post sts in odds rows, continue without any decreasing, fasten off.

Left Front

You will work a decrease at the final of every odd row (the ones where we work post stitches) and at the beginning of the each even row as shown in chart 3.

Row 1 (RS): From M2 work ch 1 (count as a 1 sc), Continue with the established cabling pattern as established before the division until 2 sts before end the row, 1 sc2tog, turn.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 3  and 1 dc in next st count as 1 dc2tog, 1 dc in each st across, turn.

Back

From M1 to M2

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1 (count as 1 sc), 1 sc in each st across, turn.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 2 (count as 1 dc), 1 dc in each st across, turn.

Rep Row 1 and 2 until Row 14 (14, 16, 14, 16) (16, 16, 16, 16).

Divide the back into 3 parts

Right Edge: 19 (23, 23, 29, 29) (31, 35, 35, 35) sts

Middle: 18 (22, 34, 26, 34) (26, 28, 40, 50) sts

Left Edge: 19 (23, 23, 29, 29) (31, 35, 35, 35) sts

Work only the right edge and the left edge separately crocheting 1 sc by RS and dc by WS until Row 21 (21, 23, 23, 25) (25, 27, 27, 27).

Joining

With WS facing, align the back and front shoulders. Starting at the outer edge of the shoulder, join the front and back stitches together using your hook, working toward the neckline. Join all remaining front stitches to the back, this section will form the shoulder.

Bottom Ribbing

Join the yarn to the left bottom corner of the fabric. Work ch 10,

Row 1: Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc blo), 1 sc blo in third ch from hook, sc blo in next 8 chs,1 sl st blo in first st on body, 1 sl st blo in next st on body, turn.

Row 2: Sk 2 sl sts, sc blo in next 10 sts, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1 (count as 1 sc blo), 1 sc blo in third st from hook, sc blo in next 8 sts, sl st blo in next 2 sts on body, turn.

Row 4-Row 122 (134, 146, 166, 174) (186, 196, 208, 218): Rep join to the body, Row 2 and Row 3, join both ends and fasten off.

Sleeves

Follow chart 4

Rnd 1 (RS): Join the yarn to underarm zone, work 1 sc in each row of sc and 2 sc in each row of dc, sl st to join. You should have 64 (64, 64, 64, 72) (72, 80, 80, 80) sts around even if you have to add or decrease some sts.

Rnd 2 (WS): Ch 2, 1 dc in each st around, sl st to join. (64 (64, 64, 64, 72) (72, 80, 80, 80) sts)

Rnd 3 (RS): Ch 1, [FPtr in sc right below, sc in next st] to end, FPtr in next sc below, sl st to join.

Rnd 4 (WS) and all even numbered Rnds: Ch 2, 1 dc in each st around, sl st to join.

Rnd 5 (RS): Ch 1, *sk next FPtr below, FPdtr in next FPtr below, sc in next st, FPdtr in skipped FPtr below, [sc in next st, FPtr in FPtr below] twice, sc in next st;* rep from * to * another 7 (7, 7, 7, 8) (8, 9, 9, 9) times, sl st to join.

Rnd 6 to Rnd 57 (57, 57, 59, 59) (59, 61, 61, 61): Rep from rnd 3 to rnd 5, sl st to join.

Next Rnd (RS): Ch 1, *1 sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * to end, sl st to join.

Next Rnd (RS): Ch 1, *1 sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * to end, sl st to join.

Sleeve Cuff

From the last stitch of the sleeve, ch 10.

Row 1: Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc), 1 sc blo in third chain from hook, sc blo in next 8 chs, 1 sl st blo into next st of the sleeve, sl st blo into next st of the sleeve, turn.

Work as for bottom ribbing around cuff.

With your hook, join both ends of the cuff with sl sts, fasten off.

Repeat for the other sleeve.

Band

Surface

Before starting to work the “inner” band of the cardigan, you need to crochet one row along the entire edge in surface crochet.

Always keep the yarn on WS, starting at the bottom right corner (where you finished the “bottom ribbing”). The hook goes from the RS to the WS: work a slip knot on WS, insert the hook through the first stitch of the corner, pull the slip knot loop through the stitch, now you have 1 loop on hook by RS (remember to always keep the yarn on WS). *Insert the hook into the next stitch of the cardigan, yarn over and pull through the stitch, you have 1 loop on hook; * rep from * to * around the entire edge of the cardigan (body–neck–body).

When you reach the rows of the body, work 1 st in the “sc rows” and 2 sts in the “dc rows”, as shown in chart 5. It is important that these stitches go through the very last stitches of the body rows. When you reach the bottom left corner, fasten off.

Front Band

Rejoin the yarn again to the bottom right corner, where you made the first st of the surface crochet.

Follow chart 6.

Ch 7 (10, 10, 10, 10) (10, 15, 15, 15).

Row 1: Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc blo),1 sc blo in third ch from hook, sc blo in next 5 (8, 8, 8, 8) (8, 13,13,13) sts, 1 sl st blo in next chain from surface part, 1 sl st blo in next chain from surface part, turn.

Work as for bottom ribbing around cuff.

When you reach the left side of the band, you will start working the buttonholes.

Buttons

The first buttonhole should be placed at the point where the front decreases begin. When you reach that spot, work:

sc in next 2 (4, 4, 4, 4) (4, 6, 6, 6) sts, ch 3 (all sizes), sk 3 sts, sc in next 2 (3, 3, 3, 3) (3, 6, 6, 6) sts, turn. In next row work as “front band” working 3 sc sts into the ch-sp.

Repeat this step each time you need to add a buttonhole. You can increase or decrease the number of chains to adjust to the size of the button, fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends and block.
