Vintage Lacy Mitts

Gauge: 4 ch sps = 2″ (5 cm) in Flat Stargazer pat, unstretched; 3 ch sps = 2″ (5 cm) in Flat Stargazer pat, fully stretched

Materials

Yarn: Crystal Palace Panda Silk (42% bamboo, 43% washable merino, 5% silk; 204 yards [186 meters]/50 grams) #3007 Blue Jeans (1 ball)
Hook: US size B/1 (2.25mm) hook, or size to obtain correct gauge
Notions: Removable stitch markers, yarn needle

Pattern Notes

Mitts are worked circularly, turning work after each round, then worked straight to separate for thumb hole. Thumb hole and top edge are finished with single crochets, and finger holes are separated by double crochets worked across hand opening.

Special Stitches

S&dc (Single and Double Crochet): Pull up a loop in indicated st, yo, pull up a loop in second indicated st, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Flat Stargazer Pattern (multiple of 12 ch + 3 for foundation):
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 7th ch from hook, * ch 5, sk 3 foundation ch, sc in next ch; rep from * to last 2 ch, sk next ch, dc in last ch.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st dc, * ch 5, sc in next sp; rep from * to end.
Row 3: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and 2 ch), sc in next sp, [ch 5, sc in next sp] twice, * 5 dc in next sc, sc in next sp, [ch 5, sc in next sp] twice; rep from * to end, ch 2, dc in last sc.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in 1st dc, [ch 5, sc in next sp] twice, * ch 5, sc in center dc of 5-dc group, [ch 5, sc in next sp] twice; rep from * to tch, ch 5, sc in tch.

Ch 48 (60) and work 21 rnds in Round Stargazer pat, ending after a pat row 3.

Thumb Hole

Next Rnd (WS): Work in established pat to last sp, ch 5, sc in last sp, ch 5, sl st in 1st sc to connect.
Work 4 rows back and forth in Flat Stargazer pat, beg with a pat row 5. At end of these 4 rows, sl st in 1st sc to connect back into rnd.
Next Rnd (RS): Sl st in each of 1st 2 ch, ch 1, sc in 1st sp, work in established pat to last sp, ch 5, sc in last sp, 5 dc in connecting sl st of prev rnd, sl st in 1st sc to connect.

Fingers

Work 4 more rnds in established pat.
Rnd 1 (WS): Ch 1, 2 sc in same sp as join, 4 sc in each sp around, 2 more sc in same sp as join, sl st in 1st sc to connect.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each of 1st 29 (36) sc, mark the 7th (8th), 13th (16th), and 19th (24th) of sc just made, s&dc over next st and nearest marked st, [sc in each of next 5 (7) sc, s&dc over next st and next nearest marked st] twice, sc in each sc to end, sl st in 1st sc to connect.
Fasten off.

Make other mitt the same.

Finishing

Work 1 rnd evenly in sc around each thumb hole.
Weave in all loose ends. yarn ball
