Joining 4 motifs
Note:
- Place the motifs in a diamond shape for the back. The RS of all motifs should face up. Join the motifs on RS.
- Join with the crochet hook, no sewing needed.
- All the motifs are the same, the numbers are just to explain joining.
Figure 1 shows how the 4 motifs are placed. Arrows and start indicate direction for joining.

Join 1st and 2nd motif along blue lines
Step 1: Attach yarn in the ch-2 sp of corner of motif 2. Ch 3 (see start near blue arrow in figure 1).
Step 2: Insert hook from below, from WS to RS in ch-2 sp of motif 1 and dc (see figure 2 for step 1 and 2).
Step 3: Sk next dc, dc in next dc of motif 2.
Step 4: Sk next dc, dc in next dc of motif 1.

Rep steps 3-4 across until next ch-2 sp.
Dc in ch-2 sp of motif 2, dc in ch-2 sp of motif 1.
Do not fasten off. Continue joining next motif as below.
Join 2nd and 3rd motif
Dc in ch-2 sp of motif 3. (figure 3 shows ch-2 sp of motif 3 with hook)

Step 1: Sk dc after ch-2 sp, dc in next dc of motif 2.
Step 2: Sk dc after ch-2 sp, dc in next dc of motif 3.
Step 3: Sk next dc, dc in next dc of motif 2.
Step 4: Sk next dc, dc in next dc of motif 3.
Rep steps 3-4 across until next ch-2 sp.
Dc in ch-2 sp of motif 2, dc in ch-2 sp of motif 3.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join 1st and 4th motif
Join the 4th motif to the rest along the red lines. Start by attaching yarn in ch-2 sp of motif 1. (see start near red arrow in figure 1).
Continue joining in same way as motifs 1 and 2 until ch-2 sp is reached.
Join 3rd and 4th motif
Join in the same way as 2nd and 3rd motifs.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing
Fringes (optional)
Attach fringes on RS of shawl at the bottom of both the front panels and on 2 free sides of back panel.
Cut strands of yarn all measuring 13” each (use longer pieces for longer fringe, shorter pieces for shorter fringe). Take 3 strands and fold them in half.
Step 1: Insert your hook in first st from below or WS to RS,
Step 2: Catch the yarn strands on hook using the centre of the folded part,
Step 3: Pull up a long loop with crochet hook,
Step 4: Yarn over with all 6 strands and
Step 5: Pull through the loop and tug firmly.
*Sk next 2 st, attach fringe in next st; rep from * across.
Rep the same for remaining 3 sides with fringes. Trim the fringes so the ends are of same length.
Blocking
Steam block the shawl if using acrylic yarn, taking care to straighten the fringes carefully. This helps the lace pattern stand out.
