Sweet Sunshine Afghan

Here comes the sun to brighten up your summer! This bright yellow afghan draws its inspiration from the bountiful sunshine in these wonderful summer months. Shell and v-stitches are worked throughout to make a beautifully patterned blanket to warm up any room.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 44” x 53”

Gauge: Rows 2-5 = 3”; Shell, dc = 2 ¾”

Materials

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver (100% acrylic; 160 yards [146 meters]/85 grams): #0235 Lemon (4 skeins)
Hooks: US size H/8 (5.0 mm) hook, US size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook or size needed for gauge

Special Stitches

Shell: 7 dcs in stitch or space as indicated.
V Stitch (V St): (dc, ch 3, dc) in stitch or space as indicated.

Pattern Notes

Afghan is crocheted in multiples of 10 plus 4.

Pattern

Row 1 (RS): With H hook ch 164, Shell in 9th ch from hook, *ch 1, skip 4 chs, dc in next ch**, ch 1, skip 4 chs, Shell in next ch, repeat from * across ending last repeat at **, turn.
Row 2: Ch 4, dc in first dc, *ch 1, skip next 2 dcs, dc in each of next 3 dcs, ch 1, skip next ch 1 space**, V St in next dc, repeat from * across ending last repeat at **, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch of turning ch, turn.
Row 3: Ch 3, 3 dcs in ch 1 space, *ch 1, skip next ch 1 space and dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next ch 1 space**, Shell in ch 3 space of V St, repeat from * across ending last repeat at **, 3 dcs in ch 1 space of turning ch, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.
Row 4: Ch 3, skip first dc, dc in next dc, *ch 1, skip next ch 1 space, V St in next dc, ch 1, skip 2 dcs**, dc in each of next 3 dcs, repeat from * across ending last repeat at **, dc in next dc, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.
Row 5: Ch 4, skip next ch 1 space, *Shell in ch 3 space of V St, ch 1 skip next ch 1 space and dc**, dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next ch 1 space, repeat from * across ending last repeat at**, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.
Continue pattern repeating Rows 2-5 for a total 65 rows then fasten off.

Edging

Work along top edge (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 3, sc) in right corner ch 4 space, *ch 2, (sc, ch 3, sc)
In center dc of Shell, ch 2, skip 3 dcs, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 3, sc) in next dc, repeat from * across ending ch 2, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 3, sc) in last ch 4 space.
Work along side edge *ch 2, skip 1 dc space, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next dc space, ch 2, skip 1 dc space, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 3, sc) in next dc space, repeat from * across.
Work along bottom edge ch 2, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 3, sc) in corner ch 4 space, *ch 2, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch below Shell, ch 2, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 3, sc) in ch below dc, repeat from * across ending ch 2, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 3, sc) in last corner ch 4 space.
Work along side edge as for opposite side edge ending ch 2, join to beginning sc and fasten off.

    I simply love this pattern. The mellow yellow color is define and the lacy appearance simply carries you away in a sunny field of yellow flowers.
