Pattern

Placemat

With MC, ch 70.
Row 1 (RS): 1 sc in second ch from hook, * ch 1, sk next ch, 1 sc in next ch; rep from * across, turn. (35 sc, 34 ch-1 sps)
Row 2: 1 sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next sc; rep from * across, turn.
Rep row 2 forty-six more times, or until placemat measures approx. 12” tall, fasten off.

Weft (Make 10)

Each length of chain weft uses under 3 yds of yarn, making this a great place to incorporate leftover bits from other projects for a sprinkling of confetti-like weaving in an otherwise plain mat.
With CC, ch 70, or enough to create approx. 19” of chain, fasten off, leaving long tail on either side for sewing in.
With RS of placemat facing, thread yarn end of one chain length onto tapestry needle.  Weave each chain length alternately over and under sc “warps” of fabric, using five lengths of chain along top and five lengths of chain along bottom of mat. Gently pick out any extra chains. Using tails on either side of chain lengths, sew ends on WS of mat to secure.

Coaster

With CC, ch 18.
Row 1 (RS): 1 sc in second ch from hook, * ch 1, sk next ch, 1 sc in next ch; rep from * across, turn. (9 sc, 8 ch-1 sps)
Row 2: 1 sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next sc; rep from * across, turn.
Rep row 2 ten more times, or until coaster measures approx. 3.5” tall, fasten off.
Note: Finished width of coaster prior to weaving will be approximately 4.5”. Weaving will cause the fabric to draw in, and will increase the height.

Weft

With MC, ch approx. 175, leaving long tail on either side for sewing in. Thread one yarn tail onto needle and weave chain length back and forth across sc warp of fabric from bottom to top. Gently pick out any extra chains. Sew tails on WS of coaster to secure.
Weave in ends. Block to finished dimensions.
