Summer Songbird Applique

Add some bright and cheery birds to your home décor with these adorable Summer Songbird Appliques. These birds are perfect to hang up anywhere you might want a pop of color, and since they require such a small amount of yarn, they’re perfect stashbusters.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Approx 5½” [14 cm] wide

Gauge: 18 sc and 21 rows = 4” [10 cm]

Materials

Yarn: Patons Classic Wool DK Superwash (100% wool; 125 yards [114 meters]/50 grams): #12402 Magenta (A, 1 ball), #12223 Apple Green (B, 1 ball), #12203 Mallard Teal (C, 1 ball), #12310 Eggplans (D, 1 ball)
Hook: US size F/5 (3.75 mm) hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Notions: Stitch marker, 2 beads, Length of narrow ribbon for hanging tie

Pattern Note

Ch 3 at beg of rnd counts as dc throughout.

Pattern

Version 1

Body
With A, ch 5; join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 15 dc in ring; join C with sl st to top of ch 3. (16 dc)
Rnd 2: With C, ch 3, 1 dc in same sp as last sl st, *1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc; rep from * to last dc, 1 dc in last dc; join B with sl st to top of ch 3. (24 dc)
Rnd 3: With B, ch 3, (2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc) 3 times, 2 dc in next dc, (3 dc in next dc) twice, (2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc) 3 times, 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in last dc; join D with sl st to top of ch 3. (36 dc)
Rnd 4: With D, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, (2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc) 3 times, 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, (3 dc in next dc) twice, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, (2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc) 3 times, 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of last 2 dc; join with sl st to top of ch 3. (48 dc)
Do not fasten off. Fold piece in half with WS tog, noting ‘head’ is created at marker.
Joining row: With D, ch 1, working through both thicknesses, join edge of 4th rnd with sl st in each st to end of row. Fasten off.

Beak
Row 1 (RS): Join B with sl st in 3rd sc from folded edge of ‘Head’ along joining row, ch 1, work 1 sc in same sp as sl st, work 1 sc in each of next 2 sc; turn. (3 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end of row; turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc3tog; fasten off.

Wing (Make Two)
With C, ch 6.
Rnd 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, 3 sc in last ch, working into opposite side of ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, 2 sc in last ch; join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in each of next 5 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 5 sc, 3 sc in last sc; join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 3: Sl st in each of first 6 sc, ch 3 for wing tip, sl st in each of last 9 sc; fasten off.

Legs (Make Two)
With B, ch 13.
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each of next 3 ch, place marker on last sl st, (ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each of next 2 ch, sl st in same sp as marked sl st) twice, sl st in each rem ch to end of chain; fasten off.
Sew Legs and Wings in position as shown in photo. Sew beads in position.
Fold ribbon in half and sew ends together through center of ring along fold line of Body to form hanging loop.

Version 2

Work as for Version 1 substituting B for A, A for B, D for C and C for D. yarn ball
