Skill Level: Easy

Size: Towel is 30” (76 cm) square, washcloth is 6” (15 cm) square, excluding edgings

Gauge: 12 sts and T8 rows = 4” [10 cm] in dc; Gauge not critical and blocking is not required

Materials

Yarn: Lily Sugar’n Cream (100% cotton; 150 yards [138 meters]/85 grams): #19605 Creamsicle (6 skeins)
Hook: US size 7 (4.5 mm) hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Notions: Tapestry needle

Special Stitches

Crab Stitch: Work sc in the opposite direction you would normally stitch without turning the work.
dc3tog: (dec) double crochet three together.

Pattern Notes

Ch-3 counts as 1 dc throughout.
On the increase section, placing the first 2 dc in the very first dc (that you would normally skip if you were working even) creates an increase on that side.

Hi, I am partway through the decrease section of the towel. I seem to have too many stiches in each row compared with the same position in the increase section. I’m definitely decreasing a stich at each end, so I think it’s something to do with identifying the turning chain, that is left unworked. A video here would help me a lot, if possible. I’m fairly new to crochet and identifying the last stitch in a row is one of the hardest bits IMO.
I’m also a bit confused about the earlier response re the missing turning chain at the end of the decrease row. It’s been added to the last decrease row only. Is that correct? Thanks so much.

Hello Linda! There seems to be missing Ch 3, turn at the end of the decrease row. We’ve made the update in the pattern. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention! Happy crochet! – Nicola

  • Question please, I have followed the pattern, but it does not appear that it will make a square. It looks as though it will be a diamond shape. What am I doing wrong? I added the two dc at the beginning right after the 3 chains and again at the end in the chain space. When decreasing, I did 2dctog without any chain stitches and it has odd angles. Please help. Thanks so much.

Hello! It does look like a diamond when you are stitching because you are working from point to point. A diamond on its side is a square. Hope that helps! – Nicola

The piece is worked on the diagonal and increases with each row. The first row is 5 stitches across, and then you are adding stitches with each turn of the row. Hope that helps! ~Chris
