Artist’s Vest

Working hdc stitches through the back loop creates a ribbing effect that looks knit when held sideways. This is a light piece that can become a staple in your summer wardrobe.

3 stitch repeats = 3¾” [9.5 cm] and 5½ row repeats (11 rows) = 4″ [10 cm];

Super Fine Weight Yarn Quince & Co. Sparrow (100% organic linen; 168 yards [155 meters]/50 grams): Flare 6 (6, 7, 8, 8, 9, 10) skeins

Hook: US size D/3 (3.25 mm)

Notions: Removable stitch markers; tapestry needle; two 1″ [2.5 cm] buttons

Abbreviations

Cluster (cl): (Wrap yarn over hook, insert hook into indicated st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook) 4 times (5 loops on hook), yo and pull through all 5 loops on hook.

Body

Rotate Lower Band clockwise and work Set-up Row of Seashell Pattern along the selvedge edge – 26 (30, 34, 38, 42, 46, 50) clusters.

Cont to work Rows 1 and 2 of Seashell Patt until piece meas 18″ [45.5 cm] from lowest point of Lower Band, ending after a RS row.

To identify where to join the yarn for the back and right front, place removable markers as follows: with WS facing, place a removable marker into the top of the cluster 7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) clusters from the right edge to mark the joining stitch for the back, then another marker into the cluster 21 (24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39) clusters from the right edge to mark the joining stitch for the right front.

Continue working the left front with the yarn, attached to the body. Row 1 will end with a slip stitch into the cluster just before the marked cluster for the back.

Block piece to measurements.

Sew shoulder seams.

Place removable markers into the right front for buttonholes as follows: Place the top marker ½” [1.5 cm] below the beginning of the neck shaping, and the next marker 2½” [6.5 cm] below the first marker.

Buttonband

Row 1 (WS): With WS of left front facing, join yarn at lower edge, ch 2, then work hdc-blo of each hdc on lower band, work 2 hdc into the side of each dc or ch-3 sp and 1 hdc into the side of each sc along selvedge edge of left front to neck, pm into loop on hook for front neck, then cont to work hdc along neckline edge to back neck sts, work 1 hdc into each sc and each ch-1 sp across back neck, then work hdc along right front neckline to beg of neck shaping, pm into loop on hook for front neck, then cont working hdc down the right front edge to the lower band, work hdc-blo into each hdc on lower band.

Row 2: Ch 2, work hdc-blo to front m, remove m, replace m into loop on hook, work 2 hdc-blo into the marked st, work hdc-blo into each st to the next front m, remove m, work 2 hdc-blo into the marked st, replace m into loop on hook, work hdc-blo into each st to end – 2 sts inc’d.

Rep the last row 2 more times, ending after a wrong side row.

Buttonhole Row (RS): Work as for Row 2 of buttonband to the first buttonhole marker, ch 3, sk 3 sts, cont to work hdc-blo to next buttonhole marker, ch3, sk 3 sts, cont working as for Row 2 of buttonband to end.

Next Row (WS): *Work as for Row 2 of buttonband to the first ch-3 sp, work 3 hdc into ch-3 sp; rep from * once more, work to end as for Row 2 of buttonband.

Rep Row 2 of Buttonband 4 more times, ending after a wrong side row. Fasten off.

Armband

With wrong side of armhole facing, join yarn at center of underarm.

Row 1 (WS): Ch 2, then work 2 hdc into the side of each dc or ch-3 sp and 1 hdc into the side of each sc evenly around, sl st into top of tch to join and turn.
Row 2: Ch 2, work hdc-blo into each hdc to end, sl st into top of tch to join and turn.

Rep the last row 3 more times, ending after a wrong side row. Fasten off.

Make second armband the same as the first.

Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.

Weave in ends. Block again if desired.yarn ball
