Texture Panels Afghan

Richly textured panels are great for portable projects to crochet on the go. The textures stand out in the single shade as shown or you could choose two contrasting shades for the different panels for a more dramatic effect.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Approx. 55” x 63” (139.5 x 160 cm)

Gauge: 14 sc and 17 rows = 4” (10 cm)

Materials

Yarn: Patons Canadiana (100% acrylic; 205 yards [187 meters]/100 grams): #10144 Medium Water Blue (18 balls)
Hook: US size H/8 (5.0 mm) hook or size needed to obtain gauge 

Special Stitches

Half Double Crochet Loop (HdCL): (Yoh and draw up a loop) 3 times in indicated stitch or space. Yoh and draw through all 7 loops on hook.

Pattern

Larksfoot Track Panel (Make Four)

Ch 21.
Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hook (counts as 2 dc), dc in next 4 ch, (ch 1, skip next ch, dc in next 5 ch) twice, dc in last ch; turn. (19 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first 6 sts, (ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, sc in next 5 sts) twice, sc in top of turning ch; turn.
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), *yoh and draw up a loop in next sc, yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook, skip next sc, (yoh) twice and draw up a loop from front to back to front around post of next dc 2 rows below next sc, (yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice, yoh and draw through rem 3 loops on hook – Rt Post St made, dc in next 3 sc, (yoh) twice and draw up a loop from front to back to front around post of same dc as last Rt Post St, (yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice, yoh and draw up a loop in next sc, yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook, yoh and draw through rem 3 loops on hook – Lt Post St made**, ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp; rep from * once more, then from * to ** once, dc in last sc; turn.
Rep 2nd and 3rd rows for pat until work from beg measures 60” [152.5 cm], ending on a 3rd row. Fasten off.
Edging: With RS facing, join yarn with sl st in lower corner, ch 1, work 1 rnd of sc evenly around outer edge of Panel, working 3 sc in corners; join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Shell Stitch Panel (Make Three)

Ch 50.
Row 1: (RS). Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, skip next 3 ch, [(HdCL, ch 2) twice, HdCL] in next ch – shell made, ch 1, skip next 3 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * to end of chain; turn. (6 shell repeats)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in first sc, *ch 2, sc in center HdCL of next shell, ch 2, 3 dc in next sc; rep from * across, ending with 2 dc in last sc; turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, (hdc, ch 2, HdCL) in first dc, *ch 1, sc in next sc, ch 1, shell in center dc of next 3 dc; rep from * across, ending with (HdCL, ch 2, hdc) in top of turning ch; turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first hdc, *ch 2, 3 dc in next sc, ch 2, sc in center HdCL of next shell; rep from * across, ending with sc in last hdc; turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 1, shell in center dc of next 3 dc, ch 1, sc in next sc; rep from * across, ending with sc in last sc; turn.
Rep 2nd to 5th rows for pat until work from beg measures 60” [152.5 cm], ending on a 2nd or 4th row. Fasten off.
Edging: With RS facing, join yarn with sl st in lower corner. Ch 1. Work 1 rnd of sc evenly around outer edge of Panel, working 3 sc in corners (and working same number of sc along each side edge as Larksfoot Track Panel for ease in joining). Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Finishing

Assemble Panels tog as follows: (Larksfoot Track, Shell Stitch) 3 times. Larksfoot Track.
To Join Panels: Place RS of Panels facing each other. With WS facing, working through both thicknesses, join yarn with sl st through back loops only of corresponding corner sc. Ch 1. Working in back loops only, work 1 row of sc up side edge to join Panels. Fasten off.
Note: Joining will leave a ridge/ditch visible along joins on RS of work. 

Edging

Rnd 1 (RS): Join yarn with sl st in any corner sc, ch 1, 3 sc in same sp, work sc in each sc around Afghan, working 3 sc in each corner sc; join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), 4 hdc in same sp as last sl st, hdc in each sc around, working 5 hdc in each corner sc; join with sl st to top of ch 2.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, working from left to right instead of from right to left as usual, work reverse sc in each hdc around; join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. yarn ball
