Holiday Trio Bag Charms

Bring a little holiday sparkle wherever you go! The Holiday Trio Bag Charms are three quick, festive accessories to dress up your purse or project bag. Featuring a holly leaf, snowflake, and poinsettia, this set adds a seasonal touch that’s merry but not over the top. Use them as charms, turn them into mini ornaments for a tabletop tree, or gift them as sweet stocking stuffers. These little makes are as versatile as they are festive.

Skill Level: Easy

SIZES excluding key chains: Snowflake 1 7/8 inches Diameter; Holly Sprig 2 1/4” W x 1 3/4” H; Poinsettia 1 3/4” Diameter

Gauge: Snowflake Rnd 1= 1 1/2” diameter. Gauge unimportant for Holly Sprig and Poinsettia.

Materials

Yarn

Snowflake: Aunt Lydia Fashion #3 Crochet Thread (100% mercerized cotton; 100 yards): White or White Pearl (1 ball)

Holly Sprig: Kreinik 1/8-inch Metallic Ribbon 100% metallic fiber; 10 yards: #015 chartreuse, 1 spool

Poinsettia: Kreinik #32 Heavy Metallic Braid 100% metallic fiber; 5 yards: 1 spool each #003HL red high lustre and #008HL green high lustre

Hook Sizes: US size #2/1.5mm steel crochet hook (Snowflake & Holly Sprig); B/2.25mm & D/3.25mm crochet hooks (Poinsettia)

Notions Tapestry needle, large eye hand sewing needle, bead threader, clear sewing thread, 3 2-inch key rings with clip in silver or gold colors, 1 1.5-inch brass ring (Snowflake) from www.pepperell.com

Beads: 2/0 clear seed bead (6mm) with silver lining, 7 (Snowflake); 6mm red AB multifaceted beads, 5 (Holly Sprig); and 4mm round gold beads, 9 (Poinsettia)

Pattern Notes

Back bump: Working behind top 2 loops of indicated st, insert hook in next back bump or bar under top 2 loops.

Special Stitches

Treble crochet (tr): With lp on hook, yo twice, insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up lp, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] 3 times.

Picot: With lp on hook, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook.

Special Techniques

Yarn under: Bring working yarn under hook and up in front of hook, grab yarn with hook, pull lp up through lp on hook to secure bead.

Snowflake

Rnd 1 (RS): Use bead threader to thread 6 clear seed beads onto white thread, leaving a 12-inch beg tail, make a magic ring, sl st in ring, *ch 3, slide one bead up close to hook, yarn under (see Special Techniques), ch 2 (snowflake tip), sl st in thread coming out top of bead just added, ch 3, sl st in ring (spoke made), rep from * 5 times, join in beg sl st. Fasten off, leaving a 12” tail. (6 spokes)

Ring

Rnd 1 (RS): With lp on hook, inserting hook through brass ring, sc join over ring, work 47 sc evenly spaced over ring, join to beg sc. (48 sc)

Rnd 2: [Picot (see Pattern Stitches), sk first 2 sc, sl st in next sc] twice, place WS of snowflake against RS of ring, insert hook in any snowflake tip and in next sc of ring, yo, pull lp up through lp on hook to complete as a sl st, sl st in next sc, * rep [ ] twice, insert hook in next snowflake tip and in next sc of ring, yo, pull lp up through lp on hook to complete as a sl st, sl st in next sc, rep from * 4 times, join in same place at base of beg picot. Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch tail. (12 picots, 24 sl sts)

Assembly

  1. Using photo as placement guide, thread ending tail through tapestry needle and use to sew ring to key chain.
  2. With clear thread and hand sewing needle, sew one bead to center on RS of snowflake.
  3. Optional: With snowflake WS facing, use hand sewing needle to weave remainder of beg tail up through snowflake to within any bead, insert needle from right to left through beads and sts on either side of beads around snowflake, fasten off to secure.

Holly Sprig

Make 2

Rnd 1: Beg at leaf tip with chartreuse, ch 9, working in back lps of chs, sc in 2nd ch from hook, [hdc in next ch, (dc, tr, ch 2, insert hook from front to back under top 2 lps of tr just made, yo, pull lp up thru lp on hook to create leaf tip, dc) in next ch, hdc in next ch] twice, sc in next ch, ch 1, working in opposite side of foundation chain, sc in first ch, rep [ ] twice, sc in last ch, join to beg sc. Fasten off. (4 tr, 8 dc, 8 hdc, 4 sc)

Assembly

Using photo as placement guide, stack tops of holly leaves together with RS facing up, use ribbon and tapestry needle to sew leaf tops together. Using same ribbon, sew 3 beads to overlapped leaves where desired, use bead threader to thread 2 beads onto same ribbon, insert thread through key chain ring, use bead threader to thread remainder of ribbon back down through same 2 beads and fasten off on WS of sprig to secure.

Poinsettia

Make 1

Rnd 1: With B hook and red braid, make a magic ring, [ch 3, tr in ring, ch 2, sl st in back bump (see Pattern Notes) of 2nd ch from hook to create leaf tip, tr in ring, ch 3, sl st in ring] 5 times. Fasten off. (10 tr, 10 sl sts)

Leaf

Make 1

Rnd 1: With D hook and green braid, rep rnd 1 of Poinsettia.

Assembly

Using photo as placement guide, with poinsettia RS facing, use clear sewing thread and hand sewing needle to sew 9 gold beads to center. Sew WS of poinsettia to RS of leaf.

Use red and tapestry needle to sew any tip of poinsettia to key chain to secure.
