Pattern Notes

A Side of Warmth was designed to have fabric lining attached to the inside of the garment. Lining the garment will help the garment retain its shape over time and will serve to insulate heat while it is worn.

Lining the garment may seem like a daunting task but is not too difficult to achieve. When lining a crocheted garment, you want to stretch the area to be lined as you sew, working in the loops closest to you only. Although designed to be lined, there is an option to opt out of lining the garment. Pattern instructions provide for both options.

Sleeves: Because the jacket is constructed top-down there is an option for the sleeves to be constructed in the same matter as opposed to the set-in sleeve as the pattern will guide. Either a set-in or top down constructed sleeve will work with this design.

Lining

If attaching lining, take the fabric lining and cut pieces to line the sleeves, pockets and body. You’ll want to cut the fabric a little bigger than the crochet piece as you will want some give to the fabric once it is attached (See Picture 5 in step 3 below) and because the crocheted piece will be stretched a bit as it is attached to the lining. With the previous in mind, note that you will also need to leave about ½ -1” of seam allowance (Picture 1 and 2). With WS facing, pin the lining to the crochet piece with seam allowance folded (Picture 3). With your hand, stretch the crochet piece against the lining (Picture 4) while keeping the piece stretched sew the thread using the overcast (over and under) stitch (Picture 5) to the end.

Step 1: Sew lining to each pocket. Sew pockets to body.

Step 2: Sew zipper to Body. With zipper closed, pin zipper to the jacket opening, making sure the rows match up as much as possible – basically, make sure everything is even. After you have pinned the zipper, unzip the zipper. Sew each zipper side to its respective side.

Step 3: With WS of lining and body facing each other, sew lining to Body. (As for the zipper, the lining will be sewn just at the teeth of the zipper to make for a cleaner looking finish.)

Step 4: Sew sleeve linings to the crocheted sleeves.

Step 5: Sew sleeves to body.

For the lining of this jacket there should be 4 pictures – referred to in the text. Are they available?
