Secret Garden Throw

We love spring and this colorful throw reminds us of cherry blossoms and new leaves. The main body is worked back and forth with three colors of yarn and the border is worked in the round. This throw will look great in many color combinations.

Gauge: 13 dc and 6½ rows = 4” [10 cm]; one 6-st repeat of pattern = 1¾” wide

Materials

Yarn:

Medium Weight Yarn Cascade Yarns Anthem (100% Acrylic; 186 yards [170 meters]/100 grams): 001 Apricot Blush (MC), 3 (5) balls; 032 Emerald (CC1), 2 (3) balls; 033 Cockatoo (CC2), 2 (3) balls.

Hook: US size I/9 (5.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Shell: 3 dc in same st

V-st: (dc, ch 1, dc) in same st

Yarns can be carried loosely up the side of your work and then hidden with the border.

Pattern

With CC1, ch 116 (134).

Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, sk next 2 ch, Shell in next ch, ch 1, *sk next 2 ch, sc in next ch, ch 1, sk next 2 ch, Shell in next ch, ch 1; rep from * across to last 3 ch, sk next 2 ch, sc in last ch, turn. Fasten off CC1 – 19 (22) Shells at the end of this row. 

Row 2 (RS): Join MC, ch 3, dc in sc, ch 1, *sc in top of center dc of Shell, ch 1, V-st in next sc, ch 1; rep from * across to last Shell, sc in top of center dc of Shell, ch 1, 2 dc in last sc, do not turn.

Row 3 (RS): Join CC2 to beg ch-3 of Row 2, ch 1, sc in top of turning ch, ch 1, *Shell in sc, ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp of V-st, ch 1; rep from * to last sc, Shell in sc, ch 1, sc in top of last dc, turn. Fasten off CC2.

Row 4 (WS): With MC, ch 3, dc in first sc, ch 1, *sc in top of center dc of Shell, ch 1, V-st in next sc, ch 1; rep from * across to last Shell, sc in top of center dc of Shell, ch 1, 2 dc in last sc, turn.

Row 5 (RS): Join CC1, ch 1, sc in first dc, ch 1, *Shell in sc, ch 1, sc in ch 1 sp of V-st, ch 1; rep from * to last sc, Shell in sc, ch 1, sc in top turning ch 3, do not turn. Fasten off CC1.

Row 6 (RS): With MC, ch 3, dc in sc, ch 1, *sc in top of center dc of Shell, ch 1, V-st in next sc, ch 1; rep from * across to last Shell, sc in top of center dc of Shell, ch 1, 2 dc in last sc, turn.

Row 7 (WS): Join CC2, ch 1, sc in first dc, ch 1, *Shell in sc, ch 1, sc in ch 1 sp of V-st, ch 1; rep from * to last sc, Shell in sc, ch 1, sc in top turning ch 3, do not turn. Fasten off CC2.

Row 8 (WS): With MC, ch 3, dc in sc, ch 1, *sc in top of center dc of Shell, ch 1, V-st in next sc, ch 1; rep from * across to last Shell, sc in top of center dc of Shell, ch 1, 2 dc in last sc, do not turn.

Row 9 (WS): Join CC1, ch 1, sc in first dc, ch 1, *Shell in sc, ch 1, sc in ch 1 sp of V-st, ch 1; rep from * to last sc, Shell in sc, ch 1, sc in top turning ch 3, turn. Fasten off CC1.

Rep Rows 2-9 until blanket meas 34 (58)” or desired length, ending with Row 5 or 9.

Fasten off and break all yarns.

Border

Note: If blanket is made larger or smaller than pattern instructions, the border needs to have a multiple of 6 sc + 5 on each side and 3 sc in each corner.

Rnd 1: Join MC to top right corner of blanket, *3 sc in corner, 107 (125) sc spaced evenly to next corner, 3 sc in corner, 107 (185) sc spaced evenly to corner; rep from * once more, sl st in first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, *3 dc in corner sc, dc in each sc to corner; rep from * around, sl st in top of turning ch. Fasten off MC and break yarn.

Rnd 3: Join CC2 to center dc of corner, ch 1, (sc in center dc of 3 dc cluster, ch 2, sk next dc, sc in next dc, *ch 2, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc; rep from * to 3 dc cluster in corner, ch 2) 4 times, sl st to top of sc in corner. Fasten off CC2 and break yarn.

Rnd 4: Join MC to center of ch-2 sp before corner, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, ch 3, *sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3; rep from * around, sl st to top of beginning sc.

Rnd 5: Sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 6 dc in ch-3 sp, *sc in next ch-3 sp, 7 dc in next ch-3 sp; rep from * around, ending with sc in next ch-3 sp, sl st to top of ch 3. Fasten off and break yarn.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block blanket if desired.
