Mr. Hedgehug

This adorable hedgehog is giving you his heart! Using a fun stitch with several chains you can achieve his prickly look without any prickles at all – just soft cuteness.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 4½” tall

Gauge: 28 sts and 28 rows = 4” [10 cm] in sc

Gauge is not necessary for this project.

Materials

Yarn:

Fine Weight Yarn Nazli Gelin Garden 3 (100 % Egyptian Cotton; 136 yards [125 meters]/50 grams): 300-21 Medium Brown (C1), 1 ball; 300-19 Light Tan (C2), 1 ball; 300-06 Deep Pink (C3), 1 ball.

Hook: US size C/2 (2.75 mm)

Notions: Removable markers; tapestry needle; polyester fiberfil

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in the round from the bottom up.

Every round is worked without a ch-1 or join. The entire body is worked in a spiral, using a removable stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round to keep track of rounds.

Rnd 1: With C1, work 6 sc in an adjustable ring.

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around 12 sc.

Rnd 3: Work (2 sc in next st, sc in next st) around – 18 sc.

Rnd 4: Work (2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts) around – 24 sc.

Rnd 5: Work (2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts) around 30 sc.

Rnd 6: Work (2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts) around 36 sc.

Rnd 7: Work (2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts) around – 42 sc.

Rnd 8: Now working in the back loop only for this round and throughout, (2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts) around 48 sc.

Rnd 9: Sc in each st around.

Rnds 10-28: Rep Rnd 9

Rnd 29: (Sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts) around 42 sc.

Rnd 30: (Sc2tog, sc in next 5 sts) around 36 sc.

Rnd 31: (Sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts) around 30 sc.

Stuff Body with fiberfil.

Rnd 32: (Sc2 tog, sc in next 3 sts) around 24 sc.

Rnd 33: (Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts) around 18 sc.

Rnd 34: (Sc2tog, sc in next st) around 12 sc.
Rnd 35:
(Sc2tog) around 6 sc.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly.

Sew up opening with tails.

Face piece

With C2, ch 11.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn 10 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc across to last st, 2 sc in last st, turn 12 sc.

Row 3: Rep Row 2 14 sc.

Row 4: Rep Row 2 16 sc.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each st across.

Rows 6-17: Rep Row 5

Row 18: Ch 1, sc in next 7 sts, sl st in next st, leave rem sts unworked, turn.

Row 19: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog, turn.

Row 20: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog, turn.

Row 21: Ch 1, (sc2tog) twice. Fasten off.

With RS facing, now join with sl st to first unworked st on Row 18

Row 18 (Left): Ch 1, sc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Rows 19-21: Rep Rows 19-21 as worked for first side of face.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly.

Ears (make 2)

Rnd 1: With C2, work 8 sc in adjustable ring, join with sl st.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st.

Rnds 3-4: Rep Rnd 2.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly.

Legs (make 4)

Rnd 1: With C2, work 5 sc in an adjustable ring, join with sl st.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st.

Rnds 3-4: Rep Rnd 2.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly.

Heart

Rnd 1: With C3, work (ch 3, 3 tr, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 tr, ch 3, sl st) all in an adjustable ring.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch, ch 2, (hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st) twice, hdc in next 5 sts, 3 hdc in next st (point), hdc in next 5 sts, (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st) twice, hdc in next st, ch 2, sl st in base of last st, ch 2, sl st in ring.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Using tapestry needle and matching thread tails and using photo as a guide, sew face onto body. Secure ears and legs around face piece. Using C1, embroider eyes and nose.

Sew heart to each front leg.

Spikes

With C1, join with sl st at base of face piece in first unworked loop on Body *(ch 6, sl st in next unworked loop on row above) several times until reach top of body. Cont to work (ch 6, sl st in next unworked loop on row below) several times until reach bottom of face piece (that matches with where started this row)*. Ch 6, sk next adjacent unworked loop, sl st in next unworked loop; rep from * to * until entire body is covered with several ch-6 loops. Fasten off.

Join with sl st to area just above face piece and fill in in the same manner as the rest of the body. Carefully look over all of Spikes and add in more ch-6 loops where there are gaps.
