Hexi Lace Cardi

This lace cardigan is worked up with a boxy fit to allow for easy shaping. It features hexagram motifs within the lace pattern and a button-front design to make it a springtime essential. Wear it over your favorite tank or strapless dress for an added layer of warmth.

Notions: Removable markers, tapestry needle, five 1″ [2.5 cm] buttons

4dc-tog: [Yarn over hook and insert hook into indicated st, yarn over hook and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] 4 times (5 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all the loops on the hook.

Pattern Notes

Body is worked in one piece from the bottom up to the underarms. Chain sts are added for the left sleeve then the left front and sleeve are worked to the shoulder. Chain sts are added for the right sleeve then the back, and back sleeves are worked to the shoulder. Then the right front and sleeve are worked to the shoulder. The back and front sleeves are joined, then ribbing is worked along the lower edge, button bands, neckline and cuffs by working hdc-blo side-to-side and joining to the body as they are worked. 

Pattern

Body

With larger hook, ch 178 (202, 226, 250, 274, 298, 322), turn.
Next Row (RS): Work Set-up Row of Hexi Lace Pattern. (29 (33, 37, 41, 45, 49, 53) SR)
Work Rows 1-4 of Hexi Lace Pattern 6 times, then work Rows 1-3 once more.
Piece should meas about 14″ [35.5 cm] from beg.
Pull the loop on the hook so it is long and won’t unravel. Remove the hook and set the working yarn aside.
Note: The live loop is at the left front.
Place removable markers for underarms in the dc 7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) repeats in from each end of the work. (7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) SR for each front and 15 (17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27) SR for back)

Right Front and Sleeve

Using a separate ball of yarn and larger hook, ch 12 (12, 12, 18, 18, 18, 18) for sleeve, sl st into marked dc on right side of body. Keep marker in place. Fasten off.
Return hook to the elongated loop and pull yarn so the loop is snug around the hook.

Block piece to measurements.

Join Shoulders

Turn work inside-out so the right sides of the sleeves are facing each other. With larger hook, join yarn at sleeve cuff of one sleeve, and *join the tops of the front and back sleeve together by working sc into the back loop of the sleeve closest to you and the front loop of the sleeve away from you; rep from * to the neck edge. Fasten off.
Rep for the other sleeve.

Lower Ribbing         

Note: Lower ribbing begins by working a single row along the selvedge edge of the left front, then is worked side-to-side, joining to the lower edge of the body around to the right front, where a single row is worked along the right front selvedge edge, which continues into the buttonhole band.
With RS facing and smaller hook, join yarn to neck edge of left front, ch 2, work 67 (67, 67, 70, 70, 73, 73) hdc evenly down left front edge, ch 13. Rotate work to work into the back loop of the foundation ch, with the RS still facing.
Row 1 (RS): Hdc-blo of third ch from hook, hdc-blo to last ch, hdc2tog using the last ch and first foundation ch on lower edge of body, turn. (12 hdc)
Row 2 (WS):  Ch 1, hdc-blo of each hdc to end, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc blo of each hdc to the last hdc before the body, hdc2tog into blo of the last hdc and the second ch on foundation ch away from the previous hdc2tog on lower edge of body, turn.
Cont working Rows 2-3 across the lower edge of the body, skipping 1 foundation ch on the lower edge of the body between each hdc2tog, ending after Row 3, working the final hdc2tog into the tch of the body set-up row. Do not turn. Continue working buttonhole band as follows:

Buttonhole Band

Set-up Row (RS):  Hdc 67 (67, 67, 70, 70, 73, 73) evenly along right front edge of body to neck. (79 (79, 79, 82, 82, 85, 85) hdc)
Row 1 (WS): Ch 6, hdc blo of third ch from hook (this adds 4 hdc for neck ribbing), hdc blo of each ch and hdc to end, turn. (83 (83, 83, 86, 86, 89, 89) hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc blo of each hdc to end, turn.
Rep the last row once more, ending after a WS row.
Buttonhole Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc blo of next 4 (4, 4, 6, 6, 5, 5) hdc, *ch 2, sk 2 hdc, hdc blo of next 16 (16, 16, 16, 16, 17, 17) hdc; rep from * 3 more times, ch 2, sk 2 hdc, hdc blo in each of last 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5) hdc to end, turn.

Neckband

With WS facing and smaller hook, join yarn with a sl st to the right front neck edge, at the corner of the neck and the buttonhole band, preparing to work a WS row across the foundation chains created on Row 1 of the Buttonhole Band.
Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, hdc in each of next 4 ch, turn.
Row 2 (RS): Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc blo of each hdc to the last hdc, hdc2tog blo of next hdc and neck edge of body, turn. (5 hdc)
Row 3: Ch 1, hdc blo in each hdc to end, turn. (5 hdc)
Rep Rows 2-3, joining evenly along neck edge to left front (joining into about every other st), ending after right side Row 3. Do not turn. Continue working buttonband as follows:

Button Band

Set-up Row (RS): Ch 2, hdc blo of each hdc to last hdc of neckband, hdc2tog blo of last hdc of neckband and first hdc of button band, hdc blo of each hdc to end of buttonband, turn. (83 (83, 83, 86, 86, 89, 89) hdc)
Next Row: Ch 2, hdc blo of each hdc to end, turn.
Rep the last row 6 more times, ending after a WS row. Fasten off.

Sleeve Cuffs

Set-up Rnd: With RS facing and smaller hook, join yarn with a sl st at foundation ch “seam” of sleeve cuff, work 82 (82, 94, 94, 106, 106, 118) sc evenly around sleeve cuff, sl st into first st to join, ch 13, turn.
Note: Cuff sts are worked back and forth over the ch sts, joining to every other sc on sleeve as it is worked around. The number of sc worked on the set-up rnd will equal the number of rows for the cuff. The number of sts suggested above results in a sleeve cuff that meas 13 (13, 14¾, 14¾, 16¾, 16¾, 18¾)”. Adjust the number of sc sts on the set-up rnd to make your sleeve cuff fit how you’d like it.
Row 1 (RS): Hdc-blo of 3rd ch from hook, hdc-blo of each hdc to last ch, hdc2tog-blo using the last ch and next indicated sc, turn. (12 hdc)
Row 2 (WS):  Ch 1, hdc-blo of each hdc, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, hdc-blo of each hdc to the last hdc before the sleeve, hdc2tog-blo of the last hdc and the next indicated sc, turn.
Rep Rows 2-3, joining twice into the end of each row and ending after working Row 2. Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to seam. Sew cuff seam.
Rep for second sleeve cuff.
Sew buttons to button band opposite buttonholes.
Block again if desired. yarn ball
