Yarn: Fibra Natura Flax (100% linen; 137 yards [125 meters]/50 grams): Tarragon (1 hank)
Hook: US size H/8 (5.0 mm) hook
Notions: US size 19 (15.0 mm) knitting needle, tapestry needle

Special Technique

Broomstick Lace: Broomstick lace rows are worked in two “passes” – the Loop Pass and Return Pass, both from the right side of the fabric. In this pattern, the broomstick lace rows will be written as two rows in the pattern, one for each pass. There are two different kinds of Return Pass used here.
Loop Pass: At the end of the previous row, do not turn. With the knitting needle held to the left, slip the last loop on the hook onto the needle (counts as first loop). Moving from left to right across the row of regular crochet, skip the first sc and *insert the hook through both loops of next sc, yarn over and draw up a loop. Slip the loop onto the needle, without twisting; repeat from * across, do not turn.
Return Pass in Ones: Remove the knitting needle from the loops, being careful not to twist or pull on them. Starting on the right side of the row, insert your hook into the first loop, pull the working yarn up to the height of the loop, yo and pull through the loop. Ch 1, and sc in the top of the big loop. Sc in each loop across to the end.
Return Pass in Threes: Remove the knitting needle from the loops, being careful not to twist or pull on them. Starting on the right side of the row, insert your hook into the first 3 loops, pull the working yarn up to the height of the loops, yo and pull through the 3 loops. Ch 1, and sc 3 in the top of the three loops as if they were 1. Work across the row of loops in groups of 3, working 3 sc in each group.

Pattern

Row 1: Ch 22, skip the 1st ch, sc in the remaining 21 ch, turn. (21 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn. (21 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across; do not turn. (21 sts)
Row 4: Work Loop Pass as above. (21 loops)
Row 5: Work Return Pass in Ones as above. (21 sts)
Rows 6-9: Repeat Rows 2-5.
Rows 10-11: Repeat Rows 2-3.
Row 12: Work Loop Pass. (21 loops)
Row 13: Work Return Pass in Threes as above. (7 groups, 21 sts)
Rows 14-97: Repeat Rows 2-13 seven times. Break yarn leaving 12” tail. Use this tail to sew Row 97 to Row 1.

Edging

With remaining yarn, work a border on both sides of the scarf. Sc in the side of each sc row, including Return Passes, and ch 3 and skip the Loop Passes. Join at the end of each round.
