Short and sweet, the simple shaping of this shrug makes it a terrific introduction to both garment-making and filet lace crochet. The filet pattern is completely charted to help you in stitching and the fit is easily adjustable by lengthening or shortening the sleeve seams.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Size: 28” (30”, 32”) cuff to cuff x 13” (14”, 15”) tall
Gauge: 9 squares (height or width) = 4” [10 cm] in filet crochet after blocking
Yarn: Designing Vashti Lotus (52% cotton, 48% rayon; 256 yards [235 meters]/100 grams): #015 Purple Glow (2 (2, 3) skeins)

To increase: While following chart for your size, add 1 dc in third stitch from each edge, incorporating the added stitches into the charted pattern for the following rows. When there are not enough stitches to add a full block, work the added stitches in dc.
To decrease: While following the chart for your size, decrease on st after the 3 dc on each edge, incorporating the new stitch count into the charted pattern for the following rows. When there are not enough stitches to remove a full block, work the odd stitch in dc.
Shrug is worked side to side, beginning and ending with 3 rows of plain double crochet, then following the chart for the size you are making.
Stitch diagram does NOT show 3-row cuffs, or additional solid block that should be added at beginning and end of each row for border.
Ch 49 (53, 57).
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. (47 (51, 55) dc)
Rows 2-3: Dc in each dc across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 4: Dc in each of next 8 (2, 2) dc, continue on across reading chart for your size. Ch 3, turn. Remember the solid blocks at the beg and end of each row are not drawn on chart.
Continue following chart for your size until 15 rows total have been completed while at the same time increasing 1 st at beg and end of Row 5 and remaining odd-numbered rows in this section. (59 (63, 67) sts)
Continue to follow stitch chart for your size until you have completed the marked 8-row repeat 5 times.
Then begin one more repeat, ending with Row 2 (4, 6).
Continue to follow stitch chart for you size, decreasing 1 st at beg and end of every other row, mirroring the increase section you made at the start.

Rows 2-3: Dc in each dc across. Ch 3, turn after Row 2; end off after Row 3.
