This lofty and light ear warmer has a retro feel and works up quickly with a variation on the puff stitch—the crossed puff stitch. This stitch is rhythmic and fun to work, resulting in a pretty accessory to ward off a wintery frost!

Skill Level: Easy

Size: One size to fit an adult medium/large. Finished ear warmer 21” circumference to fit a head circumference 22-24”. Width of ear warmer is 3½”.

Size is adjustable (see Pattern Note below).

Gauge: 6 st and 9 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Crossed Puff St after wet blocking and air drying.

Yarn:

Medium weight yarn Quince & Co Osprey (100% American Wool; 170 yards [155 meters]/100 grams): 111 Petal, 1 hank

Hook: US size J/10 (6.0 mm)

Notions: Removable marker; tapestry needle

Special Stitches

Crossed Puff Stitch (xp) (worked over 2 sts and completed with a ch 1.

Insert hook in next st, yo, draw up a loop (to approx. height of dc). Insert hook in next st, yo, draw up a loop. Bring hook across the front of the loops just made and insert hook in the first st worked, yo, draw up a loop. Insert hook in 2nd st worked, yo, draw up a loop (5 loops on hook). Yo, draw through all loops, ch 1. (1 xp completed).

Pattern Note

The ear warmer is worked in rounds. A cinched effect is created by working stitches with increasing and decreasing heights through the back loops only over a set of 15 stitches. The Crossed Puff Stitches are worked through both loops. To adjust the ear warmer’s circumference, add or subtract Crossed Puff Stitches from the foundation chain (multiples of 2).

Pattern

Ch 64.

Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Bring ends together to form a circle, being careful not to twist, sl st in first sc to join – 63 sts.

Note: Pattern is worked in spirals from this point forward. Pm after first sl st to mark beg of rnd.

Rnd 2: Ch 1 (does not count st), working in blo (sl st in next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st), in both loops (work 24 xp over next 48 sts), in blo (dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in next st), do not join.

Rnd 3: In blo (sl st in next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st), in both loops (work 24 xp over next 48 sts), in blo (dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in next st), do not join.

Rnds 4-7: Rep Rnd 3 until piece measures approx. 3½” wide.

Rnd 8: Sc in each next 63 sts, sl st to finish.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Wet block, reshape and lay flat to dry. yarn ball
